Filter Packs
Installing a well screen and filter pack in a poorly cemented sandstone formation can significantly decrease pumping rates of an aquifer, provided they match with each other in terms of slot size and material composition as determined by a sieve analysis conducted on sediment samples collected from within its boundaries.
Sphericity and uniformity of the filter pack are also significant considerations. A sub-angular-rounded shape with sphericity greater than 45% should not be desired as this increases clogging risk and likelihood of hydraulic test failure (see Figure 5). Uniformity coefficient reveals the range of particle sizes within it; lower values are generally preferable.
Glass bead filter packs such as Shur-PakTM have an average uniformity coefficient of 1.5, with their round shapes helping reduce any occlusions, fractures or irregularities that might contribute to premature biofouling of well screens. Their sphericity also minimizes risks related to excess collapse strength during hydraulic tests while permitting less dense granules for screen construction.
