Symptoms
As symptoms of stomach torsion progress rapidly from uncomfortable to life-threatening within hours, acute gastric torsion — also known as GDV or “twisted stomach” — becomes life-threatening quickly. GDV occurs when an animal’s stomach becomes distended with air or food (dilatation, commonly referred to as “bloat”) before twisting in on itself – blocking both entry and exit points into their stomach with its contents trapped along with significant amounts of gas trapped therein. The severe twisting restricts blood flow to its walls which leads to cell damage as well as systemic complications like poor oxygen delivery to tissues (hypoxemia) as well as abnormal heart beats (cardiac arrhythmias). Additionally, compression of major abdominal vessels also reduces blood supply reducing supply reducing supply leading to shock.
Dogs suffering from twisted stomachs cannot breathe properly, have pale gums and appear extremely stressed. They make repeated attempts to vomit but cannot throw up anything; eventually becoming visibly irritable or restless before collapsing because their distended, tight stomach puts pressure on their diaphragm making breathing difficult – with early symptoms including unproductive retching or an abdominal distension which feels drum-like and hard. The most reliable early indicators include unproductive retching as well as visibly distended, tight stomach that feels drum-like or hardness in relation to breathing difficulty – with unproductive retching being reliable early indicators indicating something serious may have gone amiss.
Diagnosis
GDV (or “twisted stomach,” more commonly referred to by owners), also known as bloat or twist stomach in cats and dogs, is an emergency that can quickly progress from discomforting to life-threatening in a matter of hours. Recognizing its early warning signs and seeking medical help quickly may save the life of your beloved pet.
Your dog may exhibit symptoms of discomfort such as an abnormally distended and hard abdomen, attempts at vomiting but nothing coming up, pacing around with front legs down and rear up in prayer position, unproductive retching, rapid breathing, pale gums, and an increased heart rate as early indications.
Dilation occurs when gas accumulates in the stomach (Dilatation), leading it to dilate (Dilation), then twist on its axis (Volvulus), so its contents cannot escape and blood supply to organs such as the stomach is cut off resulting in shock and death quickly thereafter if treated promptly. This condition is more common among certain breeds such as deep-chested dogs; its rapid development results in death without prompt treatment.
Treatment
Gastric dilatation-volvulus, or “twisted stomach”, is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate medical intervention. The abdomen swells rapidly until it looks like an enormous balloon; when this happens it becomes difficult for dogs to burp or vomit due to this swelling; some breeds, specifically deep chested ones, may be more prone than others to this condition and need fast treatment; surgery may be recommended to de-rotate the stomach completely and address other medical concerns as soon as possible. Recognizing early symptoms is key; early recognition and prompt veterinary consultation are both key in successfully treating GDV cases successfully – surgery usually includes extensive exploration of abdominal organs in addition to de-rotation of the stomach itself for successful outcomes.
