# Pathologists and Their Role in the Healthcare Industry

## Pathology

 The practice of pathology involves examining tissues (biopsy samples) from a patient’s body to diagnose disease. A pathologist is a doctor who specialises in this field and uses their expertise to support the healthcare industry. They are responsible for providing diagnostic tests, guiding doctors on the right treatment, and using cutting-edge genetic technologies. They have helped to reduce illnesses such as polio, and are responsible for major advancements in blood transfusions, vaccination and treatments for inherited conditions.

 The most well-known pathology subspecialty is surgical pathology, which involves evaluating surgically removed tissues and body fluids (cytology specimens) with the naked eye or a microscope to make a diagnosis of disease. This includes assessing a tissue biopsy or a body fluid sample for signs of disease such as inflammation and bleeding, as well as looking at the cellular pattern of a sample to determine whether it is cancerous.

 Molecular pathology is an exciting area of research that involves the study of disease at the molecular level. This includes analysing a tissue or fluid sample for biomarkers that can help predict disease prognosis, and designing predictive models to identify patients at high risk of developing certain diseases. Ultimately, the goal is to use molecular data to enhance morphologic findings and inform personalized medicine. This will enable physicians to target treatments that are most likely to work for each individual patient, thus optimizing the effectiveness of medical care.
