Rejuvenate Bio
George Church and his colleagues have come up with a novel approach for prolonging human lifespan: rejuvenating biological cells through adding new genetic instructions. This technique has already been tested successfully on mice by Rejuvenate Bio, the startup co-founded by Church.
Rejuvenate Bio is using gene therapy, proprietary targets and animal health markets to bring anti-aging therapies to market with maximum capital efficiency. Rejuvenate has already demonstrated their ability to reverse several age-related diseases in mice while teaming up with one of the world’s premier animal healthcare companies to develop its first therapeutic for dogs aimed at treating mitral valve disease (MVD).
Rejuvenate Bio’s gene therapy works by targeting the same cell types targeted by existing medications, but in an less invasive and surgical-free fashion. Instead of injecting directly into the bloodstream, Rejuvenate Bio uses an oral pill containing Adeno-Associated Virus which delivers its gene therapy into specific cells through digestion.
This approach may lead to more effective and safer therapies than traditional gene therapy approaches, which involve direct injections into the bloodstream. Aside from increasing efficacy, taking a pill could also enable more flexible dosages and easier administration; not only could MVD benefit from this therapy approach; other age-related conditions could also use it.
Rejuvenate Bio, established in 2018, has already raised over $27 million through private and venture debt funding as well as non-dilutive funding sources. They plan to begin human clinical trials by 2023 targeting multiple chronic conditions including Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other ailments.
Rejuvenate Bio has inked an agreement with Phibro Animal Health to develop gene therapy treatments for Dilated Cardiomyopathy ACM (DCP ACM), an inherited disorder causing progressive heart failure and sudden death among young adulthood dogs. Rejuvenate’s gene therapy has proven its efficacy at lowering risk factors associated with DCP ACM patients’ heart failure or sudden deaths and increasing lifespan by more than 10 years for affected animals.
