# Health Benefits of Energy Conservation Therapy

## Reduced Energy Bills

Healthcare facilities that implement energy conservation strategies not only save money by cutting energy usage, but can also decrease their carbon footprint and price fluctuations with renewable energy systems such as solar panels.

As a home health occupational therapist, I worked with many patients who struggled to complete daily tasks such as washing laundry or doing dishes due to low energy levels or chronic illnesses that made them easily fatigued. By employing energy conservation techniques I was able to help them save their low energies for activities they found most fulfilling and reserve what energy there was left for activities they considered meaningful.

Behavioral interventions offer an alternative way of encouraging energy conservation than price-based strategies, for instance through utilities’ programs offering personalized letters with feedback and social comparisons on energy use to provide personal feedback that encourages people to change their energy habits.

## Reduced Stress

Utilizing energy conservation strategies may reduce a person’s need for medication to combat fatigue, particularly among those living with multiple sclerosis (MS). A 2019 placebo-controlled trial demonstrated this trend: those using energy conservation methods reported less fatigue than those who hadn’t tried these approaches.

Occupational therapy uses personalized energy conservation strategies and tools to assist individuals in managing fatigue and improving their quality of life. These may include pacing, positioning, taking scheduled breaks, planning ahead and prioritising meaningful activities. Mindfulness practices also serve to decrease stress while simultaneously expanding cognitive flexibility for clearer thinking and improved decision-making processes.

Effective management of long-term conditions like MS requires conserving cognitive energy to avoid using energy on a mental level and maintain cognitive reserve – leading to an enhanced quality of life and enhanced wellbeing.

## Improved Health

Pacing and conserving energy are integral parts of health and wellbeing for individuals living with chronic illness or recovering from cancer treatments, such as the Four Ps (Planning, Prioritizing, Pacing, and Positioning). Implementing them daily helps manage fatigue by making tasks simpler for you to complete with reduced effort.

Mindfulness, an approach focused on being present in the moment, directly improves cognitive health by dispersing negative thought patterns that cause anxiety and stress. Furthermore, mindfulness improves decision-making abilities by creating an easier mental environment which encourages thoughtful responses and problem solving abilities.

Propel Therapy’s physical therapists utilize proven strategies to combat physical and cognitive fatigue and enhance functional outcomes during everyday activities. If you would like more information, reach out and book a complimentary assessment!
