Men can experience a decrease in muscle mass and testosterone levels as they age, leading to reduced health indices and an increased risk of disability in old age.
Studies demonstrate the positive benefits of regular physical exercise on clocking back the years and mitigating many of its harmful consequences, like increased life expectancy for each hour of physical activity post-50 that was completed regularly. One such study demonstrated this by showing formerly sedentary people gained two hours per hour spent exercising after 50.
Exercise
Men who exercise are less likely to develop some of the chronic illnesses that often come with old age. Exercisers may be less prone to Alzheimer’s and cancer; their rates of heart disease could decrease; and other symptoms, like gallbladder attacks and benign prostate hyperplasia could even be reduced significantly.
Strength training exercises can reverse the decline of muscle tone that comes with normal aging for men, slowing bone density loss and increasing libido and sexual function. Exercise also helps manage blood glucose levels, reduce chronic inflammation and support brain health.
One remarkable study in Dallas put healthy men in their 50s on an exercise regime, and saw them achieve incredible results within six months: returning their heart rates and maximum pumping ability back to what it had been at age 20; their blood pressure decreased, resting heart rates improved significantly and regular physical activity led to 24% lower death rates than sedentary counterparts – suggesting even moderate exercise programs can significantly extend life span if begun later on in life. According to Harvard Alumni Study research results, even taking small steps like starting an exercise routine at any age can increase life expectancy significantly; even beginning moderate exercise programs at older ages can have significant lifelong positive results!
Diet
Researchers discovered that healthy men, even those without chronic health issues, experience many physical changes as they get older. Their peak capacity of the heart to pump blood declines by 5-10% each decade of adulthood causing fatigue and breathlessness with modest daily activities such as walking. Furthermore, men gain weight, lose muscle mass, and often have fewer energy producing cells in their muscles than ever before.
Diet and sleep are crucial components to reversing many of these changes associated with aging, while exercise helps impede them. A combination of healthy eating, adequate rest, optimal hormone levels and regular physical activity can all work in concert to “age backwards”, by slowing or reversing many physical aging changes such as cardiovascular health decline, muscle atrophy (known as Sarcopenia) and brain atrophy that naturally occur with time. Furthermore, lifestyle measures like these help maintain bone density and reduce your risk for osteoporosis.
Supplements
Though genetics play an integral role in aging, lifestyle choices can significantly slow and reverse age-related decline. Examples include quitting harmful habits like smoking and overexertion during exercise sessions, getting plenty of rest and recreation after physically demanding activity sessions and taking supplements that promote bone health, cardiovascular wellbeing, muscle power and brain power – these all play important roles.
Care must be taken when choosing supplements to take, particularly ones with claims that sound too good to be true. Many supplement manufacturers make false or misleading health claims which may lead to serious side effects. Before beginning any new supplements or taking any new prescription medicines it’s a good idea to check with your physician first and ensure they’re compatible.
Researchers conducted one of the largest clinical trials ever, tracking 18,530 male physicians aged 50s and 60s over 11.2 years in an attempt to assess any benefits from taking multivitamin/mineral (MVM) or selenite supplements; they discovered no reduced rates of major cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke or death due to cardiovascular disease) than nonusers; however MVM use was associated with 14% lower risks of coronary revascularization surgeries such as coronary angioplasty or bypass surgery [24].
