# The Latest Treatments for Cancer

 In a clinical trial at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, researchers are testing a device that emits modulated radiofrequencies through a spoon-shaped antenna placed in the mouth. The frequencies emitted by the device interact with certain types of cancer cells, halting their growth without harming surrounding tissue. The treatment is designed for patients with metastatic liver cancer who have failed first- and second-line therapies.

The treatment consists of placing the spoon-shaped antenna in the mouth for 30 seconds to 60 seconds, three times a day. The electromagnetic fields emitted are distributed throughout the body by the tongue’s surface, with the frequencies targeting liver cancer cells specifically.  To enroll in the study, participants must have a diagnosis of advanced metastatic pancreatic cancer. Participants also must be post-menopausal or agree to use an effective method of birth control for the duration of the study.

 Results from the trial, published in 4Open, a journal published by EDP Sciences, suggest that TheraBionic P1 can improve survival for some patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC, the most common type of liver cancer. Researchers tracked the outcomes of 18 patients with HCC. They analyzed the data along with 41 patients who had participated in a phase II study and historical controls from earlier trials.

## Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)

 The chemotherapeutic solution is pumped into your abdomen using a special drainage system made up of tubes that put the solution in and take it out (inlet and outlet catheters). It is diluted with a liquid that helps the drugs get into your body, a solution that is typically composed of 0.9% NaCl or 5% glucose. This mixture is pumped into your abdomen at a rate of 1.5 to 2 liters per square meter of your body’s surface area.

 In some cases, your doctors might not recommend HIPEC if you have a condition that could make you particularly sensitive to the drugs used in this treatment. This is particularly true if you have serious heart problems, lung conditions or liver disease, as well as certain health issues like a history of blood disorders or immune system problems.

 The decision to use HIPEC for a specific cancer depends on the size and distribution of the disease, the feasibility of achieving adequate cytoreduction, the patient’s general condition and available alternatives. It is a complex treatment that can be used as a single procedure or as part of a more comprehensive strategy, combining surgery and HIPEC with systemic chemotherapy, immunotherapy or other intraperitoneal therapies. Clinical trials are aimed at refining patient selection criteria and identifying optimal combinations of treatment.

## Dendritic Cell Immunotherapy

 Dendritic cell immunotherapy is one of the most promising treatments in cancer today. It is used to help cancer patients overcome the immune suppression that allows malignancies to hide from the body’s natural defense systems. It is a personalized treatment that uses the patient’s own dendritic cells to help target and attack the tumor. It is an excellent option for people who are undergoing a cytoreductive surgery, as it can help target any cancer that remains in the body after the surgery. It can also be used in combination with chemotherapy or other forms of immunotherapy to improve survival rates.

 Dendritic cells are special immune system cells that capture pathogens or malignancies in the bloodstream. Once they have captured them, they release special signaling molecules that allow the body’s T-cells to recognize and destroy the harmful agent. Unfortunately, the tumor microenvironment releases immunosuppressive cytokines that prevent dendritic cells from effectively presenting these antigens to T-cells. This is why many cancer patients do not respond to standard treatment options, including vaccines.

 Luckily, scientists are developing new methods that enable dendritic cells to more efficiently present tumor antigens to T-cells. Modern immunocine dendritic cell therapy allows patients to receive personalized cancer vaccines in Germany that are developed using the patient’s own dendritic cell and tumor antigens. These cells are then grown in a laboratory setting and exposed to tumor antigens, which helps them become effective antigen presenters.

 Studies indicate that immunotherapy can significantly improve survival rates for cancer patients. In some cases, it can even cure the cancer entirely. This is especially true for ovarian cancer, where adding DC vaccines to conventional treatment increased five-year survival to over 90% from under 10% in the chemo era.

 In a recent study, Drakes and Stiff found that adding DC vaccines to standard care resulted in median survival of 19-23 months for advanced ovarian cancer. Similar results have been seen in melanoma, metastatic prostate cancer, and unresectable liver cancer. This is an exciting finding, as it suggests that immunotherapy can be combined with other treatments to boost survival rates and cure more patients of their cancer.

 

## Radiation Therapy

 Radiation therapy uses X-rays to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors. It can also help control pain when a growing tumor presses on bones, nerves, or organs. Radiation treatments may be given daily for a few weeks or longer, depending on the body area being treated. Side effects are limited to the area being treated, and most people can continue working or other activities during treatment.
