# What Are Tensor Rings?

## They are a piezoelectric antenna

A piezoelectric antenna can transmit or receive electromagnetic waves and can be used in compact communication devices such as mobile phones and computers. It is made from a piece of piezoelectric material that is connected to an electric signal generator and a radio frequency coil. It also includes filter and impedance matching arrangements. This arrangement allows the device to operate in a wide range of frequencies. It can also be modified to fit different applications.

The concept behind the antenna is based on the acceleration of charges within the piezoelectric material. This interaction between mechanical and electrical forces causes a periodic change in the polarization of the material’s bound charges. As a result, the amplitude of electromagnetic radiation generated by the material increases with the frequency of the varying electric signal. It can be converted to a magnetic field using an RF coil and is then detected by a spectrum analyzer.

For transmitting, the researchers developed a rod-shaped crystal of lithium niobate. When AC voltage is applied to the crystal it vibrates, generating an oscillating electric current flow that is emitted as VLF radiation. The signal it generates is ten times more powerful than that produced by a wire quarter-wave antenna. In order to minimize the impact of transverse parasitic modes, they enclosed the device in a perfectly matched layer.

As a result, it can pick up RF electromagnetic signals that would be blocked by conventional metal antennas. The sensitivity of this system is boosted by using an external series or shunt capacitive or inductive element whose values and locations are calculated from a Smith Chart.

Unlike traditional electromagnetic wave devices, this piezoelectric technology produces no harmful side effects and is safer than other technologies like nuclear power plants or coal-fired electricity generation plants. It is also less costly than other technologies, and it can be made into a variety of shapes and sizes to suit different applications. In addition, it can be adapted to various environmental conditions. This means that it can be used for both terrestrial and space-based applications.

## They are a superconductor

In a regular conductor like copper, electrons collide with atoms and lose energy in the form of heat, which is why electricity flows slowly through power lines. But in a superconductor, those electrons pair up and move in lockstep without losing energy. This phenomenon is called a “quantum mechanical wave function,” and it creates macroscopic quantum state of zero electrical resistance. In this state, electrons can carry massive amounts of electricity without losing energy, resulting in zero transmission loss.

Computational materials science, powered by machine learning and density functional theory, is systematically screening thousands of candidate materials. High-pressure experiments are accelerating the search for materials that can work at high pressures and higher temperatures. Finally, a better understanding of what makes certain materials superconduct could lead to new materials that superconduct at lower temperatures and less extreme pressures.

While it’s easy to see the excitement around a potential breakthrough in condensed matter physics, it’s also important to remember that a single experimental result isn’t a scientific revolution. The boom-and-bust cycle of LK-99 illustrates the strength of the scientific process: extraordinary claims were subjected to rigorous scrutiny, and physicists quickly converged on the right conclusion.

The most promising applications of superconductors involve high-frequency electronics and magnets. For example, a University of Birmingham superconducting filter installed at the Jodrell Bank radio telescope filters out atmospheric noise and allows pulsars, quasars, and galaxies to be detected more clearly. These devices outperform and are smaller than their traditional counterparts. In addition, they are impervious to some strengths of magnetic fields, enabling magnetic levitation and superconducting devices known as SQUIDs (sensitive magnetic field detectors).

Of course, a material’s ability to superconduct won’t solve all of humanity’s problems. We still need to find ways to store and deliver solar and wind energy, as well as nuclear fusion reactors that offer a carbon-free alternative to fossil fuels. But, in principle, the right superconductor could enable more compact and efficient wind turbines, for example, and help drive the transition away from fossil fuels.
