# Gastric Torsion Medicine Can Save a Dog’s Life

Bloating and twisting of the stomach, called gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), is a serious and life-threatening condition that cuts off blood flow to vital organs. If not treated immediately, GDV can lead to death in a matter of hours. Emergency surgery, such as gastropexy, can prevent GDV from recurring. This procedure involves suturing part of the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent stomach rotation.

 

## How is it done?

 GDV (Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus, or GTV) is an emergency condition in which the stomach becomes distended with food and fluid and twists onto itself so it cannot empty, placing tremendous strain on organs as blood flows are cut off, ultimately leading to organ failure and blood clots forming around them. Without prompt treatment this life-threatening emergency could become fatal for any animal involved.

 X-rays can help to identify whether bloating is the source of discomfort, and veterinarians may be able to decompress a distended stomach and relieve gas or fluid pressure by decompressing its distended area. In cases of GDV, however, the stomach has already twisted so correction must take place immediately in order to avoid serious complications such as infection, shock and even permanent heart damage.

## What are the risks?

 Gastric dilatation vovulus (GDV) is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when the stomach fills with food and gas, then twists on its axis so it cannot empty. This puts pressure on the organs and blood vessels, cutting off their supply of oxygen and resulting in shock. If untreated, it can lead to death within hours. GDV is most often seen in deep-chested dogs, such as Great Danes and Saint Bernards, although any breed can develop this condition. Even with surgery, mortality rates can be high. Stabilization is usually done through the placement of an orogastric tube and gastric decompression. There is a risk of inadvertent esophageal perforation during the procedure.
