# Vibroacoustic Disease and Wind Turbine Syndrome

## Causes

 Biological tissue reacts differently when exposed for long periods to low frequency noise (LFN). Wind Turbine Syndrome (WTS), which involves imbalance organs of the vestibular system, can manifest with symptoms including disturbed sleep, dizziness, tinnitus and sensation of quivering or vibration; nervousness; rapid heartbeats; memory loss as well as increased irritability and anger. ## Diagnosis

 [Vibroacoustic](https://alsuprun.com/) Disease (VAD) is a whole-body pathology characterized by abnormal proliferation of extracellular matrix. This condition results from prolonged exposure to low frequency noise (LFN) ranging from 500 Hz to infrasound, such as aircraft technicians, commercial pilots and cabin crew members of both military and civilian aviation, ship machinists, restaurant workers and disc-jockeys who work regularly in LFN environments.

 Prior to 1987, LFN was widely believed to cause only cognitive and neurological disturbances; however, following the autopsy of a VAD patient during this timeframe, it became apparent that its effects extended far beyond this domain and affected all areas of the body including cardiorespiratory system functioning. This point was further highlighted with studies of lung tissue obtained from deceased VAD patients using light and transmission electron microscopy studies performed on such tissues from deceased VAD patients who died as a result of LFN exposure.

 Unfortunately, physicians do not often inquire into their patients’ work environments in terms of sound and vibration levels; further compounded with their lack of faith that any disease caused by sound can exist can contribute to misdiagnosis of many cases.

## Treatment

 WTS (wind turbine syndrome) typically disappears once an infrasound source is removed from an individual’s home; however, VAD symptoms often linger long after noise has subsided and can be debilitating, particularly if they affect vestibular organs (balance organs) as well as nervous and respiratory systems (nervous system, respiratory system). VAD symptoms may include sleep disruptions, headaches, tinnitus hearing loss dizziness trembling anxiety depression memory problems concentration difficulties etc.

Genotoxicity studies conducted with human and animal cell cultures exposed to LFN revealed sister chromatid exchanges; researchers then investigated its morphological response using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy on tissue fragments obtained from VAD patients and rodents exposed to LFN.
