Furthermore, rhythmic vibrations may improve strength, mobility and balance as well.

Percussion and vibration techniques are commonly utilized by respiratory physiotherapists as a manual technique to assist airway clearance for conditions like cystic fibrosis. When used alone or combined with other techniques and positions to enhance their effect.

Mucus Clearance

Mucus build-up in your lungs makes breathing difficult and increases the risk of infection, making life harder than necessary. A chest vibration device can help loosen and mobilize mucus from your lungs making coughing out easier; use manual chest physical therapy (CPT) or SmartVest machine for airway clearance therapies at home.

CPT utilizes techniques that combine percussion and postural drainage to clear mucus from all five lobes of your lung. You may require CPT several times daily and it typically lasts 20-40 minutes per session. Your healthcare provider uses a stethoscope to locate any areas where mucus concentration occurs before using various body positions that allow gravity to drain it towards larger airways; they then may vibrate your back or chest in order to further dislodge mucus from its hiding spots, moving it towards main airways before encouraging you coughing it out!

CPT involves having your healthcare provider hold their hands cupped together and tap your chest, back, rib cage area in a rhythmic pattern similar to bongo playing – using only light touches so as not to cause pain. Some individuals with bronchiectasis also learn CPT on their own or with help from family members trained by healthcare providers.

FET (or “huffing”) is another technique used to assist mucus clearance, similar to inhaling through your nose before holding your breath and exhaling forcefully out your mouth; like blowing out candles on a birthday cake. Studies show that FET can clear more sputum than regular coughing alone.

Manual chest physiotherapy can be time-consuming to administer on an ongoing basis and may require assistance from caregivers. With SmartVest chest physiotherapy devices providing automated oscillatory therapy therapy sessions at home for individuals suffering from bronchiectasis or respiratory conditions that cause thick mucus accumulation such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis or certain neuromuscular disorders.

Postural Drainage

People suffering from lung diseases that produce thick mucus buildup often find it hard to cough it out of their lungs. Postural drainage with chest vibration therapy helps break up clogging by encouraging strong coughs that clear away excess mucus from the lungs – as well as helping avoid complications due to too much mucus accumulation in their bodies.

Chest physiotherapy (CPT) is usually administered by a respiratory therapist or nurse. They will instruct a patient how to position their body for exercises while showing them the safest positions for their condition. CPT providers may switch between vibration, percussion or other techniques in order to clear various parts of the lungs of any obstructions or blockages.

CPT is one of the core elements of Airway Clearance Therapies’ (ACTs) approach to improving pulmonary function. This therapy uses manual hand percussion and vibration, postural drainage and deep breathing exercises to facilitate movement of secretions from within the lungs into larger airways.

As part of CPT’s percussion portion, caregivers will gently clap their hand and wrist against their chest over the affected area in order to create a hollow sound, rather than one with an unpleasant slapping sound. Clapping can be done either manually or using an electronic vibration source; forceful but non-harmful action should be used.

One study demonstrated how percussion and vibration together improved secretion clearance among those with cystic fibrosis; however, when used alone percussion provided no additional benefit over traditional thoracic expansion exercises for non-CF bronchiectasis patients.

Although ACTs may benefit many, they may not be appropriate for everyone. Individuals with unstable heart conditions, recent chest or belly surgery, an untreated collapsed lung that hasn’t been addressed yet, severe respiratory distress with coughing up blood or active tuberculosis could experience complications during therapy; any spinal cord injuries, untreated fractures of ribs or skin injuries as well as any previous spinal cord injuries should consult their doctor first before engaging in chest physiotherapy to see if this therapy would be right for them.

Coughing

Your therapist may use their hands or a device to percuss and vibrate your chest and back, often in combination with positions to drain mucus (postural drainage) and breathing techniques that promote coughing. They may use a stethoscope or similar device to identify areas with excess mucus in your lungs; then using various positions or body percussions they may break it up and move it up into your airways for better health.

At its core, manual chest physiotherapy involves your provider using their palm to gently scoop up water while striking or clapping your back in a rhythmic pattern to target areas of mucus buildup in your lungs. They usually start from the bottom up; family members or nurses who have been trained can also provide this therapy. A newer therapy known as high-frequency chest wall oscillation or HFCWO involves wearing a vest connected to an air pulse generator; this generates shear forces which amplify vibrations to loosen mucus buildup.

After several minutes of percussion, your provider may instruct you to perform either a forced expiratory technique, such as huffing, or direct coughing method. These involve deep breaths followed by forceful exhalations through your mouth often while saying “huh”. These techniques help mobilize and propel mucus towards larger airways so it can be expectorated or spit out more easily.

If your cystic fibrosis symptoms are more severe, mechanical assisted cough therapy (MAC) could provide the assistance needed. It combines an oscillating compressor and cough assist for variable pressure support of respiratory muscles.

Researchers from UCSF conducted a study published in Pediatr Pulmonol that demonstrated how using both magnetically augmented chest wall oscillation (MAC) and high-frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO) together significantly enhanced lung function among children with cystic fibrosis (CF). This combination proved far more effective than either device alone, or conventional pulmonary rehabilitation programs.

Pain Relief

Your respiratory therapist may employ a manual technique called vibrations to help loosen secretions from the lower parts of your lungs, making it easier for you to cough them out and clear away from your system.

Your healthcare provider might use either a hand-held vibrator or vest that provides vibration. When performed manually, chest percussion or vibration will involve bending their wrists into cups and shaking the upper front of your chest (or back if you have flat hands) over muscles in the ribcage area – making sure not to vibrate over spine, breastbones, stomach etc as this could damage these organs. Similarly, they could perform similar procedures over your upper back over muscular areas that extend across collarbone and shoulder blades.

Conventional chest physiotherapy techniques were first created over 100 years ago, and continue to be utilized today as airway clearance therapy (ACT). They can help clear away mucus from your lungs and decrease risk of respiratory infection; and can be combined with bronchodilators as part of pulmonary rehabilitation treatment plans.

Under traditional methods of chest physiotherapy, your healthcare provider will utilize a stethoscope to listen to your lungs and identify areas with excess mucus. After finding these locations, they will place you in positions designed to drain that mucus out as quickly as possible while using percussion and vibration to break up thick mucus that makes coughing up mucus easier for you.

Your percussion therapist will use a cupped hand to apply rhythmic pressure over areas in your lungs with excess mucus, beginning from the bottom up and working their way towards the surface. They may even teach you or a family member how to perform this at home on their own.

Vibration utilizes similar movements as percussion but with your hand gently shaking your ribs instead. Vibration therapy is less harsh and is therefore more likely to avoid injury to organs on either side – including your left spleen, liver and kidneys in your lower back. Chest wall vibrators (provided through either vests or mechanical vibration from healthcare providers) provide fine oscillatory movements timed with expiration (breathing out).

Rhythmic vibrations applied to the chest wall or generated inside airways through specific devices help loosen thick mucus, making natural coughing and clearance easier.
