Consciousness<\/h2>\n

Consciousness has long been a hotly debated subject in philosophy, psychology and neuroscience circles – whether that means in popular shows such as “Westworld” or the science behind it. Some scholars view consciousness as an immaterial soul separate from our bodies (dualism); others claim it’s simply a way of processing information in our brains.<\/p>\n

One theory, known as the Global Neuronal Workspace (GNW) model, postulates that sensory information from external sources is written onto an invisible neural blackboard where it can then be accessible to a variety of cognitive systems like working memory, language processing and planning modules.<\/p>\n

If these systems come together to produce an experience we consider conscious–such as leaping into a lake on a hot summer day–they will produce qualia that we feel. However, if this doesn’t happen then there’s no reason for us to believe our brains are conscious.<\/p>\n
