An OT may also advise individuals on ways to save and conserve energy so they can do more of what matters to them in life.

A recent study revealed that severe and chronic fatigue was significantly more prevalent among those living with one or more diagnosed chronic illnesses, making their illness even more debilitating and inhibiting them from participating in activities they love. Energy conservation strategies may prove particularly helpful for managing energy when living with conditions which easily tire people out, so energy conservation could prove valuable for all who struggle with maintaining energy levels.

PACE financing offers cities, towns and villages financial incentives to promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, drinking water quality and resiliency improvements. In this introductory installment of our webinar series we explain how PACE works by showing building owners how an assessment added to their property tax bill can cover these upgrades over time – providing savings or investments over time as well as transferability when selling a building.

Position

Positioning is an energy conservation technique used to prevent unnecessary strain on a patient’s body. Patients suffering from repetitive use injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome or rotator cuff tears could find relief through positioning techniques like placing a towel under their wrist during handwashing to relieve pressure and relieve tension.

Occupational therapists also educate clients who rely on oxygen therapy about proper positioning to minimize overexertion of physical movement, which could result in oxygen saturation numbers dropping below safe levels and leading to fatigue, discoloration of the skin or nausea.

Occupational therapists can teach strategies, like pacing, planning and prioritising that empower clients to live life to the fullest without running out of energy. Mindfulness can be an incredibly useful way for OTs to teach these strategies – helping clients break negative thought patterns and respond more thoughtfully in stressful situations.

Pause

Effective fatigue management is essential to those living with long-term health conditions. Energy conservation involves performing daily tasks in ways that reduce physical effort and fatigue, conserving energy for activities valued most by an individual, such as those they value most. Occupational therapy can support energy conservation through personal strategies, helpful tools, and behavioral changes that benefit an individual – such as pacing, proper positioning, scheduled breaks and utilising adaptive equipment as energy-saving techniques; pausing can allow individuals to assess situations, consider different paths forward and choose what solution would work best – this practice known as self-reflection; additionally it can help manage emotions effectively!

Plan

Occupational therapists working with palliative care patients (those terminally ill with diseases like cancer, ALS or dementia) frequently employ energy conservation strategies in their treatments, which help manage energy levels so as to focus on essential activities throughout each day or week.

Implementing these strategies, individuals can reduce fatigue and enhance their quality of life. Occupational therapy can support energy conservation through tasks modification, tool recommendation and habit change support; additionally it can educate on “4 Ps” of energy conservation: Pacing, Positioning, Planning and Prioritising.

Pacing can help reduce fatigue by encouraging individuals to work at an appropriate pace without overexerting themselves, using rest positions which decrease physical strain to decrease pain and fatigue, providing educational handouts on oxygen monitors to track blood saturation levels and avoid desaturation, planning can assist people in prioritizing meaningful activities while grouping similar tasks together, scheduling demanding activities when possible and delegating as required to others.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a mental training technique with numerous positive effects on cognitive functions. It can increase attention and focus, reduce stress by encouraging relaxation, help with decision-making processes and cognitive flexibility as well as reduce fatigue for increased performance – among many other advantages it brings. Occupational therapists can utilize mindfulness alongside other energy conservation strategies.

Energy conservation techniques are an array of strategies OTs can use to lessen physical and cognitive fatigue for their clients. These may include planning activities ahead of time, reducing noise and clutter, optimizing lighting levels, using memory aids such as lists or sticky notes for recall, sitting when possible and encouraging frequent breaks during activities – this not only reduces fatigue but can help clients make more accurate decisions in high-stress situations.

Occupational therapists (OTs) should aim to incorporate mindful practice into their client work. Integrating mindfulness into therapy sessions will increase engagement and lead to a more holistic approach in treatment processes. According to Covalent Careers, mindfulness has been shown to reduce patients’ worry and anxiety about the future – often an source of significant stress; and assist in relieving sleep disorders which often arise due to stress or pain.

Fatigue can be an everyday issue for people living with long-term medical conditions, yet occupational therapists (OTs) can provide vital assistance in managing it and living fulfilling lives.
