Firewalls

A firewall is a network security device that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing data based on predetermined security rules. It creates a barrier between trusted internal networks such as those inside an enterprise network and untrustworthy external ones like the Internet in order to stop hackers, viruses, and malware from accessing individual computers or entire enterprise networks. Firewalls come both physically and digitally.

Traditional packet-filtering firewalls work by scanning each data packet individually for IP addresses, port numbers, protocols and any additional header information, before making decisions based on predetermined rules such as allow or block traffic based on established criteria. While this approach is efficient and simple to implement, this doesn’t allow any analysis of what lies within each packet, leaving them vulnerable to attacks such as DNS spoofing attacks.

Stateful inspection firewalls combine packet-filtering with additional capabilities, assessing network connections to determine whether data packets should be permitted or blocked. While this provides more protection than packet filtering, its additional analysis on outgoing traffic can take its toll on performance.

Application-level gateways (proxy firewalls) provide another form of network protection by acting as intermediaries between networks to inspect and filter traffic at the application layer. This helps detect malicious activity as well as increase throughput capacities more effectively than packet-filtering firewalls; however, their functionality could leave them susceptible to attacks that exploit it as an entryway into their networks.

Maintaining and configuring firewalls correctly can significantly enhance their security, efficiency, and performance. To make sure that they’re operating at peak condition, prioritize critical policies and review logs frequently to detect misconfigurations or conflicts which could leave your network exposed to vulnerabilities.

5. Access Control

Access control is a proactive security measure designed to prevent unapproved access of resources and comply with regulations such as GDPR and HIPAA that require stringent management of personal information.

Authentication is the foundation of access control and involves verifying the identity of both people and systems using methods like passwords, biometric scanners or other forms of identity verification. Once an identity has been verified, authorization determines their access level by way of policies which determine what they can do, where they can go and when they should arrive.

RBAC, Role-Based Access Control, is the go-to model for enterprises. This access control scheme assigns permissions based on business roles – for instance an HR employee may not need access to marketing materials or payroll – while more advanced models like DAC/MAC/ATTB provide different levels of dynamic access control as well as risk monitoring.

Radionics provides an extensive array of access control solutions, from hardwired to wireless access points and all forms of alternative communication options, for residential, commercial and multi-building sites.
