Group Reiki sessions can take many formats but work best when there is a clear container and people know what to expect.

A 2023 study of distant Reiki for frontline healthcare professionals found that after 4 20 min distance Reiki sessions, participants had reduced stress and anxiety, as well as improved wellbeing and sleep quality.

What is it?

Reiki is a simple, non-invasive, energy healing system that promotes relaxation and stimulates a natural healing response. It is a holistic approach that balances the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being of an individual. It is a powerful tool for helping to heal on all levels, including the cellular level. It is safe and effective for everyone, from children to animals.

It is believed that a more developed aspect of Reiki energy can give instructions to the energy field, cells and organs about what needs to be healed. It also gives guidance to the body about what type of energy it requires and how it can best function in order to heal.

The HSZSN acts as a homing device, directing Reiki to go to the original cause which could be in this life or in past lives, to higher dimensions if necessary, or anywhere it’s needed to deeply heal. It can also more effectively create the necessary energy including the right levels and types of consciousness to deliver the unique instructions our bodies, minds, emotions and energies need to fully heal.

Reiki Medic-Care is a volunteer initiative that set up insured practitioner teams across Europe to provide free Reiki sessions for frontline healthcare workers suffering from burnout symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants self-referred to the program through an online booking system and were allocated Reiki sessions systematically via the private Facebook page for practitioners. Reiki practitioners were not informed about which participant they had been assigned to, and were not allowed to communicate with them before, during or after the session.

The session itself lasts 30 minutes and participants are asked to be rested in a comfortable position for the duration of the healing. They are encouraged to use this time to prepare their hearts and minds for receiving healing, by spending some time reflecting on what it is they would like to have healed. They can do this by either setting an intention to be healed in particular or by focusing on what is most in need of healing within their own body and energy field.

How does it work?

Reiki energy is a form of healing that is transmitted through the air and can be picked up anywhere in the world. When you participate in a group remote session you are able to set an intention and the healing energy will focus on that intention for you, while also healing anything else around it that needs to be healed. The energy is very wise and knows what you need before you even ask it!

During the COVID-19 pandemic we conducted a pragmatic within-subject pilot trial of our no-cost distance Reiki Medic-Care program for frontline healthcare workers in the UK. The study tested the feasibility of research procedures for a future RCT and evaluated changes in health symptoms, including stress, anxiety, pain, wellbeing, and sleep quality.

Participants self-referred to the program and were randomly allocated to groups that received either Reiki or a control group receiving no treatment (waitlist). All practitioners were trained at least to level 2 in Usui Reiki and enrolled in an organisation affiliated with The Reiki Council, the UK’s governing body for Reiki. They were all insured for public practice and participated in the program on a voluntary basis. They were given access to a private portal that matched participants with practitioner groups and allowed the practitioners to see the request but not the participant’s name, ensuring confidentiality.

For 20 min sessions, the Reiki practitioners were instructed to place their hands on key areas of the client’s head and body, namely the forehead/frontal lobe, eyes, sinuses, pituitary gland/hypothalamus, ears, temporal lobe, upper jaw, pineal gland, occipital area, brain stem/top of spinal cord, and heart/thymus. In addition, they were encouraged to use an intuitive approach to selecting these locations, based on perceived responses from the client’s body.

MYMOP pre score means for symptom 1 decreased from 4.9 to 2.1, and mean scores for symptom 2 and wellbeing also decreased significantly. These preliminary findings suggest that distant Reiki may be an effective and accessible tool for reducing frontline healthcare worker stress, anxiety, pain, and wellbeing. Future studies should incorporate a waitlist control, include a larger sample size, and evaluate longitudinal data to determine whether improvements in stress, anxiety, pain, and wellbeing are sustained.

What are the benefits?

Reiki is energy that can be transmitted across distance just as the internet transmits data. Energy can travel to where it is needed most regardless of whether the practitioner is in the same room or on the other side of the world. In a Reiki distant healing session the client is recommended to sit or lie down in a comfortable position and to close their eyes. They are also encouraged to have any music they like playing in the background. They are also told that they may notice subtle signs, feel relaxed or even fall asleep during their session. These are all normal reactions to energy healing.

Reiki Medic-Care aims to provide frontline NHS hospital medical professionals with a free program of distance Reiki to help alleviate burnout symptoms. This pilot study aimed to test the feasibility of the program by assessing recruitment, data completeness, acceptability and intervention fidelity. It was also designed to assess changes in participants’ stress, anxiety, pain, wellbeing and sleep quality before and after the program.

Eight Reiki practitioners simultaneously gave Reiki to each participant for 20 minutes on 4 consecutive days. This was based on the untested theory that use of more practitioners might enhance the beneficial effects of Reiki. The same 8 practitioners were used for each participant, unless there was an unavoidable conflict. A private Facebook group was used to allocate requests to practitioners, and the participants were not told who their practitioner would be. The practitioners could only see the name of the participant, but not any other details, so that they did not know if they were treating an individual with whom they had previously worked.

This pragmatic within-subject pilot trial showed that Reiki Medic-Care was feasible to implement and was associated with improvements in outcomes compared with the control group, including reduced stress, anxiety, pain, and improved wellbeing and sleep quality. Future work is planned to extend the trial to include a waitlist control group and longitudinal data, to better evaluate the sustained benefits of this innovative treatment for healthcare workers. This will also allow comparison of results with in-person Reiki studies, to better understand the nature of the positive effects observed.

Group remote Reiki healing is a beautiful way to connect with others and heal collectively.
