An increased focus on natural ingredients has propelled research to explore medicinal and aromatic plants with diverse biological activities, with Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) being one of the most studied medicinal plants with proven antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective effects as well as memory enhancing, wound healing and anti-aging benefits.

A GC/MS and LC-ESI-HRMS phytochemical profiling analysis of rosemary leaves hexane extract revealed triterpenoids and monoterpenoids with high content of phenolic diterpenes such as carnosol and carnosic acid, along with high amounts of triterpenoids and monoterpenoids with significant anti-elastase, anti-collagenase and anti-hyaluronidase activities without any observed cytotoxicity – suggesting potential use as anti-ageing ingredients in cosmetic formulations. Furthermore, in silico molecular modelling identified verbenone as being responsible for anti-elastase activity through its high docking score and favorable binding mode – providing further proof for its potential role as an anti-elastase ingredient.

In vivo evaluation of rosemary hexane extract photoprotective efficacy was performed using UVB-irradiated mice model and its bioavailability improved through incorporation into lipid nanocapsule-based gel formulation. Furthermore, rosemary hexane extract demonstrated antioxidant, anti-aging and wound healing activity with minimal toxicity.

Chamomile

Chamomile is a potent anti-aging herb with antiviral and antioxidant properties that may help heal wounds quickly, soothe irritated skin, reduce inflammation and aid wound repair.
