MeRT is a noninvasive, drug-free treatment designed to reprogram abnormal electrical signals in the brain. Unlike traditional TMS therapies, however, MeRT can be tailored specifically for each individual with detailed diagnostics and qEEG analysis to achieve lasting changes.
MeRT employs qEEG and EKG technology to evaluate brain patterns and promote their healthy synchronization, supported by extensive third-party research published in leading scientific journals.
What is MeRT?
Magnetic E-Resonance Therapy is an noninvasive and drug-free approach to treating brain-related conditions. MeRT employs a gentle magnetic field to stimulate and balance brain function under guidance from sophisticated imaging and diagnostic tools, stimulating or balancing certain parts of the brain using sophisticated imaging and diagnostics, including mapping or diagnostics of specific pathways and areas in need of improvement, so the brain functions according to design. MeRT has proven especially useful for those dealing with traumatic brain injury or concussion, autism or major depressive disorder as it offers safe, lasting treatments that improve quality of life while helping individuals cope with difficult symptoms or manage mood disorders better.
MeRT is an innovative therapy that combines repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS, FDA-cleared for Depression) with quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG), to develop personalized protocols targeting your specific brain pattern. It utilizes detailed imaging analysis of your brain in order to create customized stimulation plans designed specifically to address it; while qEEG pinpoints areas where regulation may be improper; while rTMS serves to stimulate and “retrain” its circuitry to function normally again.
At each treatment session, a magnet will be applied to your head and pulsed every 6-8 seconds for the duration of your session. This treatment is completely pain-free and very relaxing – similar to receiving massage or chiropractic adjustments. Some patients find themselves able to focus on music or movie while receiving their session; many describe the feeling as light brain massage.
MeRT can be used in combination with medication, speech therapy and occupational therapy treatments for maximum effect. Because MeRT syncs your brainwaves together it may speed up other therapies’ effects – we will collaborate closely with other providers to ensure you’re receiving optimal care.

How Does MeRT Work?
MeRT is a noninvasive magnetic field treatment used to stimulate and balance brain function, with proven success helping those suffering from Autism, PTSD and TBI/concussion. MeRT’s use is guided by sophisticated imaging and diagnostics tools like the Quantitative Electroencephalogram which analyses your brain activity to help us pinpoint areas needing improvement before working alongside repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), which stimulates specific regions of your brain for treatment. MeRT technology has been featured by leading scientific journals.
At The Brain Treatment Center, our team of therapists use MeRT (magnetic resonance therapy) – an enhanced form of transcranial magnetic stimulation – to treat mental health conditions like depression, ADHD and anxiety as well as traumatic brain injury and concussions. MeRT treatments take place over six weeks; sessions occur daily Monday to Friday for 30 minutes.
After conducting a qEEG and analysis, our team of neurological experts craft an individualized neural synchronization protocol tailored to meet your specific needs. After which, your therapist uses MeRT using a magnetic coil; pulses of magnetic energy target the affected brain cells and cause them to relax thereby restoring normal communication pathways.
At each session, our therapist will place the magnetic coil against your scalp for 6-8 seconds and gently pulses it. You may hear some tapping noise as the machine pulses; however, this noise should not cause any discomfort at all.
MeRT has been found to effectively optimize Alpha wave activity in the brain, which can significantly decrease symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder. MeRT can improve eye contact, connections between people, speech ability and tolerance of complex environments as well as address PTSD, ADHD and depression effectively.
MeRT has also been shown to enhance the effects of other therapies and medications, particularly those used to treat TBI and PTSD, where MeRT can speed up brain healing while simultaneously relieving symptoms.
What Are the Benefits of MeRT?
MeRT uses advanced imaging and diagnostics to tailor its treatment specifically to each individual, tailoring it specifically to their condition. Our personalized approach improves communication and synchronization within the brain for lasting improvements while eliminating common TMS side effects such as side effects.
MeRT uses magnetic waves to stimulate the brain and restore its balance between different pathways in the brain, such as mood pathways. Unbalances may arise due to internal or external forces causing dysregulation; for instance, trauma-induced injuries can weaken mood pathways leading to depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which MeRT can counter by strengthening these happiness-inducing paths instead.
MeRT safely stimulates brainwaves when applied to the scalp. Side effects typically include a slight headache that can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol; it will subside once your brain adjusts to MeRT therapy.
MeRT therapy often produces significant improvements for symptoms such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or cognitive dysfunction in as little as six weeks of therapy – unlike repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), which requires multiple sessions before becoming effective, MeRT’s results come quickly and efficiently.
Mark Hyman, M.D. is an esteemed functional medicine physician and best-selling author who founded the Cleveland Clinic Functional Medicine Clinic as well as producing the podcast The Broken Brain to discuss any subject relating to brain and body health. In one episode Dr. Erik Won from Wave Neuroscience discussed using MeRT treatment with military personnel who have experienced trauma/PTSD.
MVP Medical Care’s team of professionals are committed to helping our clients find the best outcome for their conditions. While MeRT may not currently be covered by insurance, we will provide you with all of the paperwork after your treatment that can help submit to your provider to see if they’ll reimburse for it. Furthermore, we offer convenient payment plans through Care Credit for added peace of mind.
How Long Will MeRT Take?
Starting MeRT treatment requires coming in five times each week for 30-minute sessions in a comfortable chair, where an expert neuro-technician places a magnetic coil on your head and delivers low-frequency pulses that stimulate targeted areas of your brain for six to eight seconds per minute. This noninvasive and painless treatment often feels similar to getting a light massage for your mind.
MeRT uses qEEG data to help physicians devise customized and targeted protocols tailored specifically for your conditions and their root causes. This distinguishes it from standard TMS treatments which do not use this guidance.
Each person’s brain has an unique electrical pattern, making its waves as individual as their fingerprints. As such, standard TMS treatment approaches may not address the source of your problems effectively. MeRT is the only comprehensive brainwave analysis and personalized treatment system using both qEEG and TMS to balance activity levels and promote neuroplasticity in an individual way.
A qEEG will show your physician where in the brain dysregulation is taking place, and once the results are interpreted by our experienced physicians and brain scientists, a personalized MeRT treatment plan will be created specifically tailored to address it. No matter whether it be Autism, Depression, PTSD, Anxiety or TBI/post-concussive syndrome; our MeRT treatments are tailored specifically to each condition that needs treating.
At our center, we will collaborate with you to determine how many sessions per week and the length of treatment will last. Treatment typically lasts 6 weeks before returning for a qEEG follow-up evaluation to make sure any improvements made have lasting results.
MeRT was designed to balance brain activity and promote neuroplasticity – the natural process by which our brain can rewire itself for improved functioning – utilizing personalized brainwave analysis and tailored treatment protocols tailored specifically for each patient to make long-lasting improvements in symptoms.
MeRT is an advanced and comprehensive form of brainwave analysis, TMS therapy and neuroplasticity-based treatments available worldwide. We believe this cutting-edge technology will transform mental health care by better allowing us to treat an array of conditions associated with imbalances between how the brain communicates with other parts of your body.
