How Does Oxygen Therapy Reverse Aging?

oxygen therapy reverse aging

Oxygen can accelerate the healing process when provided in high concentrations to the body through hyperbaric oxygen therapy, helping speed up recovery time while simultaneously strengthening immunity, reversing cognitive decline, and rejuvenating skin tissue. This treatment may even reverse cognitive decline!

Tel Aviv University and Shamir Medical Center of Israel conducted research that demonstrated how oxygen therapy in a pressurized chamber could reverse two key biological clocks of aging by lengthening telomeres at the ends of chromosomes and decreasing levels of senescent cells.

Improved Circulation

Oxygen therapy helps combat aging by improving your body’s blood circulation. When your body receives extra oxygen, it stimulates new blood vessel formation – increasing metabolism and energy levels while simultaneously improving stem cell functioning to repair damaged tissues within your body. Furthermore, oxygen therapy provides relief against oxidative stress – one of the key drivers behind aging processes.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen at pressures higher than atmospheric, which allows your lungs to collect up to 100 times as much as usual and enter your bloodstream and be distributed directly to every cell and tissue of your body. This increases natural cellular-molecular respiratory exchange processes while stimulating collagen production; which will eventually reduce signs of aging such as wrinkles, sagging skin and grey hair.

Researchers recently conducted a study which demonstrated how short-term exposure to high oxygen levels can significantly boost antioxidant enzymes, telomere length and the clearance of senescent cells – suggesting short-term hyperoxia could serve as an effective strategy to slow biological aging processes.

This breakthrough suggests we may be able to stop and even reverse the aging process at a cellular level. A trial conducted with 35 healthy adults over 64 took part, receiving 60 daily HBOT sessions over three months; they then underwent blood samples before, during, and two weeks post trial (results showed increased telomere length in blood cells and decreased numbers of senescent cells). The HBOT treatment proved its success as shown by increased telomere length as well as decrease of senescent cell number.

Scientists believe these results to be the first time that scientific intervention has successfully reversed aging at a cellular level in humans, using oxygen therapy in a pressurized chamber. According to this research, results of telomere length restoration and cell function restoration show promise as biomarkers associated with human aging are restored indicating that oxygen therapy could potentially prevent diseases associated with aging such as dementia. This research has been published in Aging.

Reverses Cognitive Decline

Alzheimer’s is one of the most prevalent and debilitating brain disorders, affecting millions of people annually and increasing exponentially each year. Studies have demonstrated that hyperbaric oxygen treatment can significantly mitigate and even reverse some of its most serious symptoms and pathologies associated with Alzheimer’s.

One 58-year-old woman diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who was about to enter a nursing home was treated with 60 HBOT sessions over three months, demonstrating significant improvements in memory, attention and information processing speed correlated to increased cerebral blood flow in specific areas of her brain. Her results were published in peer-reviewed journal Aging.

Studies have also demonstrated how HBOT may help protect healthy individuals against cognitive decline by improving the brain’s use of glucose, due to increased blood flow to the brain resulting in maintaining stable glucose levels.

Scientists discovered in another study, in mice with an Alzheimer’s disease model, treatment with HBOT led to reduced levels of phosphorylated tau and increased protein synthesis while simultaneously decreasing oxidative stress and amyloid plaque formation.

Researchers found that HBOT treatments significantly boosted levels of VEGF – an essential protein involved in both new brain cell formation and maintaining existing ones – leading to increased perfusion rates on an MRI scan and microstructural changes across frontal, parietal and limbic regions of the brain. This increased perfusion is directly correlated with increased brain MRI perfusion as well as microstructural modifications within these regions of the brain.

Multiple clinical trials have been conducted to investigate the use of HBOT as a way of treating MCI and Alzheimer’s disease. All have demonstrated its ability to significantly increase subjects’ cognitive test performance with tools like the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery as well as improve quality of life for them.

Athletes who tend to have a higher risk of dementia have also seen significant improvements in their mental function after receiving various treatments, as evidenced by one former neurosurgeon and Olympic athlete’s own study showing how his hyperbaric oxygen treatments doubled his telomere length, thus significantly increasing both cognitive and physical performance.

Restored Skin Health

As we get older, maintaining a strong immune system becomes even more essential. Over time, as we age our bodies become depleted of essential nutrients and toxins accumulate reducing white blood cell efficiency and their ability to fight off infections. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber treatment may help reverse signs of aging by increasing natural immunity by increasing stem cell circulation and improving their effectiveness.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been employed for nearly 100 years by physicians to treat various maladies, ranging from decompression sickness in deep-sea divers to carbon monoxide poisoning. Breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room provides blood and tissue saturation of oxygen and produces numerous physiological benefits including stimulating your brain, increasing cognitive abilities, reducing inflammation and speeding healing.

An increasing number of skin care clinics now offer oxygen facials as an anti-ageing strategy, offering this type of facial to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, firm skin, and promote a more youthful look. What’s even more remarkable is that new research indicates high-pressure oxygen in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber can actually stop or even reverse blood cell aging processes!

Researchers conducted this groundbreaking research by recruiting healthy volunteers and placing them in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for 60 minutes each day over three months, in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for three months. After the trial was complete, blood samples from participants revealed that their telomeres had lengthened while levels of senescent cells had reduced significantly – an incredible find because senescent cells are the culprit behind many symptoms associated with aging such as inflammation, loss of collagen production, deregulated nutrient sensing mechanisms, altered mitochondrial dynamics, etc.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a chamber is the safest and most effective way to reoxygenate your cells and rejuvenate skin health. Improved Recovery

Oxygenation therapy improves blood flow, relieving fatigued muscle groups. Furthermore, stem cell activation and regeneration increase, leading to bone and cartilage production as well as slowing scar formation. Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) has also been known to enhance mental clarity and focus, providing athletes with tools for optimizing training regimens and optimizing sports performance.

Oxygen therapy has long been utilized as a form of treatment, including for deep sea divers with decompression sickness or carbon monoxide poisoning, carbon monoxide poisoning victims and more. Patients receiving treatment breathe pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber to prevent hypoxia – something which has now expanded beyond this niche treatment area and become widely utilized to address chronic illnesses and reverse biological markers of aging.

Studies have recently shown that oxygen therapy could lengthen telomeres, which typically shorten with age and are linked to diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer. Though the study was small, evidence showed it reversed some markers for shortening in humans; researchers plan to further explore its effectiveness for other conditions.

As opposed to portable oxygen equipment sold at higher altitudes, which is only suitable for people suffering from COPD or other respiratory conditions, this new therapy is non-invasive and safe. Based on an oxygenation protocol used for treating patients suffering decompression sickness, participants spend 20 minutes at a time breathing near-100 percent oxygen in a pressurized chamber, followed by five minutes of atmospheric oxygen at normal atmospheric levels to restore body levels to normal levels; the cycle repeats itself several times to create the same effects observed among astronauts who exhibit longer telomere length than their Earth counterparts do.

Research found that when repeated for 30 sessions, this process significantly enhanced antioxidant enzyme levels, telomere length and clearance of damaged and nonfunctional senescent cells – all without pharmaceutical intervention – thus marking an important first step towards improving human health and lifespan.
