Salem Prep provides a therapeutic learning environment for students whose social-emotional needs cannot be fulfilled in traditional public school settings. Academic instruction follows the standard curriculum set out in Salem Public Schools Curriculum Maps but may be modified according to each student’s unique requirements. At Carlton Elementary, they utilize the Responsive Classroom approach and foster an inclusive peer culture to ensure all of their students can successfully collaborate on specialists sessions, lunch/recess time, and science lab on an ongoing basis. Students requiring more restrictive environments may be placed in out-of-district settings ranging from collaborative settings to private special education schools as determined by their Team in accordance with federal and state regulations for providing a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment.
