Reiki is a noninvasive energy healing practice that draws upon universal life energy to promote relaxation, reduce stress levels and facilitate emotional and physical healing. Reiki practitioners can tap into this source either physically through touch or remotely – practitioners have even reported success using distance Reiki sessions to promote physical healing! Reiki has been proven effective at alleviating pain, nausea, anxiety and depression. Furthermore, its practitioners report increased healing, personal growth and helping their clients manage chronic illness symptoms better.
Many hospitals are adopting Reiki therapy into their patient care programs to offer stress relief and pain reduction while simultaneously cutting treatment costs. Reiki also serves to boost staff morale while creating an excellent patient experience; many nurses and other health care providers have experienced improved feelings of wellbeing after receiving Reiki treatments themselves.
Libby Barnett is a Master Reiki teacher and counselor, working to assist her clients in achieving healing on all levels, including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. A graduate of Simmons School of Social Work with over forty years of counseling and healing practice under her belt; author of Reiki Energy Medicine: Bringing Healing Touch Into Homes Hospitals Hospices (Knopf 2004).
This book introduces Reiki’s many advantages for clinical settings, detailing how best to implement its practice in clinical environments. It covers body’s energy system as well as creating conditions favorable for healing through Reiki treatments. An ideal resource for those in health care who would like more information on this energy healing modality.
Studies conducted on patients receiving Reiki treatments have revealed dramatic decreases in symptoms such as pain, fatigue, nausea and sleep disturbances. It has also been found that Reiki treatments reduce incidences of infections and accelerate healing processes; several studies also demonstrated how Reiki treatments bolstered spleen and lymphatic systems thereby helping prevent the development of autoimmune diseases like lupus, fibromyalgia or thyroid diseases.
Reiki not only has physical and emotional advantages, but can also help lower a nurse’s burnout rate in busy hospital environments – something which may otherwise be impossible without some form of self-care tool such as Reiki – but its ease of use makes it the perfect accompaniment at any point during a shift or shift change.

Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is an ancient hands-on healing art. This natural and safe form of energy healing and stress reduction provides deep relaxation and healing, improving overall health and well-being while managing pain or supplementing medical treatments. Practitioners lay their hands along energy doors or chakras (Sanskrit for wheel), to balance energy flow for healing or simply relaxing purposes.
Libby Barnett, MSW is an engaging teacher of traditional Usui Reiki. As one of the oldest practicing Master Teachers on the East Coast and having taught over 14,000 people nationwide – including health care professionals at numerous hospitals – she has made her mark with Reiki Energy Medicine: Bringing Healing Touch Into Home, Hospital, and Hospice, one of her coauthored bestsellers.
As health care institutions strive to deliver high-quality, cost-effective services, Reiki has emerged as an alternative therapy in hospitals, hospices and counseling centers. Nurses, physical therapists and physicians report using Reiki to manage pain and promote healing; counselors treating terminal illness find Reiki gives their clients increased physical and emotional resilience compared to prior practices; however some forms may pose the threat of spiritual contamination by malevolent forces.
