Marma therapy is a healing practice in which pressure is applied to 107 energy points around your body in order to influence biochemistry and increase prana flow. This treatment has long been believed to improve biochemical functions while increasing prana circulation.
Both ayurveda and Chinese medicine adhere to the belief that disease occurs as a result of disruption of prana, or vital energy. A marmani utilizes his/her fingers to restore this balance by applying pressure onto them with their fingertips.
Hands
The hands are home to several vital marmas that influence energy circulation within fingers, palms and forearms. One such marma, Apanga marma located between thumb and index finger at web farmec (see picture), connects directly to Vyana Vayu which controls movement as well as navel chakra regulating touch sense; additionally it is linked with throat chakra which affects hearing as well as being linked with Vyana Vayu which controls Vyana Vayu; it can also help ground body, soothe Vata or give an Earth connection feeling by helping grounding Vyana Vayu in body by connecting directly with Vyana Vayu.
Right Vidhura Marma connects with the third eye and supports dream and imagination, as well as to throat chakra, sense of sound and ear, as well as to left Eustachian tube regulation. On feet is Talahridaya Marma which connects with Earth element to ground Vatas and draw healing energies from it while at the same time discharging negative energy down into it.
There are four basic treatments for marmas: 1. Massage and Energy Methods–Abhyanga or other forms of massage combined with energy therapy techniques such as hand gestures or the chanting of mantras; and 2. Herbal Treatment–Taking herbs as supplements or applying them directly onto marmas poultices directly.
3. Piercing/Blood-letting: Vedha/sira of various marmas to allow blood-letting(sira). 4. Other Methods: Magnets, rods, needles or any other instruments may also be employed on them for treatment.
Marma points are invisible locations where body, mind and psychic energies converge; when these points become blocked by physical, mental or psychic stressors, health and vitality suffer as a result. Marma Therapy is an expansive system of energetic healing used to increase immunity, balance emotions, detoxify the body and heighten awareness – ideal for yoga teachers looking to deepen their energy understanding, Ayurvedic students looking to integrate Marma into clinical care or bodyworkers looking for aligned healing approaches – this course will cover them all!
Feet
Marma points on the body correspond with three biological humors that balance triguna (sattva, rajas and tamas) life force or prana in humans. Marma therapy utilizes massage, herbs and yogic techniques to access these energy centers for healing and wellbeing.
Important marma points on the feet include those located at the big toe and thumb. The left thumb marma relates to Vyana Vayu and Bhrajaka Pitta via its associated nadi; its connection helps control limb movement while simultaneously controlling joint lubrication and supporting healthy tissue growth.
On the right foot is a Kshipra marma which controls blood circulation and strengthens immunity, as well as providing positive effects on heart, lung and muscular systems – as well as toes – thus improving mobility, visual activity and visual processing speed.
Marma points in the feet correspond with all three doshas, with those located on the left hand and foot being the most significant. Apana Vayu connects with Apana Vayu and two lower chakras while Pitta correlates to two upper chakras. Big toe and thumb marma points can also help stimulate mental and spiritual well-being, and may be controlled with aromatic oils such as sandalwood, calamus or camphor as well as massaging or massaging these areas and taking herbs in pill form or decoc tions to stimulate them.
Head
The head contains several crucial marma points for receiving and expressing Prana, particularly Vyana Vayu (outward-moving pranic force). These accessible spots make massage and acupuncture treatments highly effective; their impact extends throughout the spine, arms, mental, emotional health development.
As with other marma points, these are susceptible to traumas caused by accidents and traumas, which can disrupt blood circulation and result in serious and long-term complications. Therefore, it is vital that they are treated with extra caution and care.
Marma points can be activated through massage, herbs, gem therapy and certain sound frequencies and mantras. Chanting of the sound OM is known to open and balance marmas when spoken out loud with short u-sound, such as when speaking about put. HUM’s power lies in channeling energy from Atman directly into marma sites.
Utilizing energy points in Yoga practice adds greater effectiveness to any type or level of postures, breathing exercises, or meditations. Stimulation of these points can unblock stagnation, support emotional catharsis and bring body-mind balance back into alignment. Furthermore, stimulating these points can promote relaxation, immune support, detoxification through panchakarma treatment protocols, energy transmission, guided release work or energy healing – although massage should always be conducted under guidance by trained therapists in order to avoid potentially dangerous stimulation that might trigger any underlying health issues or create adverse side effects.
Neck
The neck contains several key energy points for receiving and exuding Prana, particularly those associated with Vyana Vayu. They’re also key for accessing and discharging energy from within your subtle body.
Sthapani (third eye) refers to the neck marma as the source for collecting and dissipating energy of all the nadis in this region; eight right/left predominant nadis in particular provide energy that supplies eyes/sense organs as well as regulate water/plasma metabolism; it also regulates circulation through spleen/lymph vessels.
Annavaha Srotas are channels that facilitate digestion. A mantra specific to this marma is VAM (pronounced VUM, or vulnerable), which should be repeated whenever you wish to open, clear or release something within it.
There are various techniques for activating marma points, including abhyanga or massage. This therapy typically employs oils – most frequently safflower oil mixed with Ayurvedic herbal oils – as well as pressure and movement techniques as well as various forms of heat to achieve its effects.
Lepa is another method that applies herbal pastes or ointments directly to marmas, such as cinnamon or nutmeg to stimulate shatvata marmas or herbs that reduce pitta effects in areas of digestion or the heart.
Piercing or bleeding (vedha/sira) of body’s marma points can also help cleanse nadis, open energy channels and support emotional release. However, this advanced practice requires extensive Ayurvedic knowledge and training by its practitioner.
Back
Locating at the elbows and behind the knees, these points are easy to access and extremely important for tapping into Vyana Vayu (outward-moving pranic force) as a source of healing energy and transmission to others. They have proven especially helpful when treating diseases of liver or spleen.
Combining massage, aroma therapy and acupressure on these marmas is an effective way to energize the entire body. Spicy aromatd oils like ginger, cardamom, wormwood or turmeric may be best suited to Pitta types while cooling sweet oils such as sandal wood rose or lotus flower are suitable for Vata types. Stimulation of these points also serves to detoxify hepatobiliary systems, eliminate edema, improve digestion, promote weight loss and increase physical activity levels.
Knowledge of these vital energy points enables yogis of all levels to deepen their practice and strengthen their connection to their highest selves. By integrating Ayurveda’s ancient healing techniques and Yoga’s proven body-mind integration, this approach to health and wellness offers an effective toolkit for transformational change. Stimulation of Marma Points through light touch and massage can help dislodge any blockages to emotional release, relieve any physical discomforts and realign the body-mind system. Chanting of OM can generate an effective energetic vibration in sensitive areas that channels immortal force from Atman (Higher Self). This vibration can be felt at any of the Marma sites and provides healing energy. Ayurved practitioners believe that the mantra OM can bring vitality and longevity to our lives through its vibrational resonance with Atman. Therefore, its symbols can often be found prominently displayed during Yoga poses as well as included into teachings such as Hatha Yoga.
