Quantum entanglement is a strange phenomena in which particles that interact become so linked that you cannot describe each particle independently despite being far apart, even across great distances. This happens because each particle exists in superposition mode–where its up and down states coexist simultaneously (or, alternatively, its red and blue states do too). As long as no measurement has been taken on one of them yet–they remain connected. When one is taken, its effects immediately impact another particle that might have been far away in space and time!
Quantum entanglement has long baffled physicists. It seems to contradict Einstein’s special relativity theory, which asserts that information can only travel at lightspeed; yet when instantaneously knowing the spin state of distant particles becomes possible through quantum mechanics laws, this information has likely traveled faster than light.
So the challenge lies in understanding if this strange phenomenon is real: information must somehow enter entangled particles for them to communicate across space – however until recently scientists were unable to offer definitive answers experimentally.
That all changed in 2015, when three separate groups of physicists successfully verified Bell’s Theorem and demonstrated that entangled particles behave in this extraordinary fashion.
These experiments employed pairs of photons – the fundamental building blocks of visible light. Photons can become entangled through two methods: they may become linked by their polarization state or orbital angular momentum (OAM) state – with OAM providing insight into a photon’s spin properties.
Bell’s Theorem can be demonstrated using pairs of entangled photons with opposite polarizations, making measurement easy. Two other experiments using OAM states proved far more complex to measure; they required long distance transmission; this had not been possible until 2018. Luckily, in 2018 researchers from Brookhaven National Laboratory and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology managed to transmit 100 km using optical fibers; marking an important step toward scaling quantum networks and space-based quantum computing.
