Researchers from the New England Vector-borne Encephalomyelitis Center (NEWVEC), at University of Massachusetts Amherst, recently conducted an investigation and discovered that both cancer cells and Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease, rely heavily on glycolysis to propagate. Lactate dehydrogenase helps break down glucose; inhibiting this enzyme stops glycolysis from taking place thus killing cancer cells or stopping further spread by bacteria.
Researchers were able to replicate their findings both in laboratory experiments and mouse models, and are presently exploring whether this approach could be used for human patients as treatment. Their research is published in Pathogens journal.
Studies are encouraging, yet it is important to remember that some patients continue to be affected even after receiving standard antibiotic therapy. A 2022 research paper published by our Center revealed that even after early diagnosis and 21 days of antibiotic treatment, 14% still develop Post Treatment Lyme Disease (PTLD), which includes severe fatigue, joint pain and cognitive deficits.
Many patients with PTLD are taking herbal and prescription intracellular antibiotics to kill bacteria in their cells.
