Green tea contains plant compounds called catechins that have antioxidant properties and contribute to many of its health-promoting claims. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is by far the most prevalent catechin.
EGCG can work effectively alongside caffeine to increase metabolism and break down fat deposits, and reduce visceral fat accumulation which contributes to conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
A 2022 study discovered that EGCG can promote fat oxidation both during exercise and rest, as well as increase production of Adiponectin, which regulates glucose levels and metabolic functions.
An intensive 12-week high-dose EGCG regimen was found to result in weight loss and changes to obesity-related hormones in obese women, according to research published in Cell Biochemistry & Function. Participants taking the supplement saw decreased ghrelin secretion, leading to increased fat metabolism and thus, potentially, weight reduction. Furthermore, exercise-accompanied with this supplementation program helped decrease abdominal fat and improved insulin resistance that can contribute to type 2 diabetes.
