This exhibition presents original devices and artifacts from four radionic practitioners – Marcel Vogel and Christopher Hills included – curated by artist David Hollander to demonstrate subtle energy transformations.
Like an earlier form of Scientology, this system operates under the assumption that matter emits electromagnetic radiations that can be interpreted and transmitted remotely to treat illness at a distance.
Dials
Abrams’ machines operated based on his belief that all matter emits vibrations or radiations, and by knowing how to read these, it was possible to heal patients, grow crops, solve engineering problems or make tape stick. His revised radionics theory was popular during the 1940s and 50s – it relied less on boxes with wires than drawings and intentions – James Merrill won a National Book Award-winning epic poem written using Oujia board divination while Phillip K Dick allegedly used I Ching divination to solve his novel; however his claim that engineering divination could solve science problems was revolutionary at its time.
Trinity’s dial machines are physical practitioner instruments crafted with dials that are used in radionics traditions for symbolic rate work, focused intent study and other non-medical practices. Each dial machine includes dials, witness wells, stick pads and plates configured specifically to suit its intended style of work.
Antennas
Antennas do not create new energy out of nothing; they simply focus the existing energy and make certain parts stronger than others in three-dimensional space, often at the expense of others (known as gain). This focusing effect is known as gain.
When an antenna is fed with signals of the right frequency, its standing wave pattern becomes quite resonant – ideally giving maximum current per minimum voltage (impedance). Unfortunately, even short antennas may not exactly resonant at their operating frequency of interest.
Most antennas exhibit some form of series capacitive or inductive reactance at their feedpoint, typically offset using lumped elements such as capacitors or inductors installed along the main path of current traversing them. Antennas may also incorporate capacitive or inductive structures within their conducting bodies in order to cancel out feedpoint reactance such as open-ended “spoke” radial wires or looped parallel wires.
Even without inductive or capacitive reactance, close proximity with other metal objects can cause the antenna’s fields to interact in ways that reduce its impedance at its feedpoint – known as near-field interference and known for reducing efficiency especially at higher frequencies.
Radiation patterns of radio antennas are three-dimensional plots depicting the relative power transmitted in each direction at various angles, usually displayed on polar graphs of horizontal and vertical cross sections. An ideal isotropic antenna emits equal amounts of power in all directions – represented as a sphere in this diagram; most monopole and dipole antennas tend to show more circular or toroidal patterns that look more like torus or donut shapes instead.
Electrical impedance at an antenna feedpoint can vary depending on many factors, including physical dimensions and locations of conductors, medium, and ground conditions. Extending antenna length beyond its designated operating frequency will result in a gradual increase of impedance; to compensate, antenna tuners or impedance matching networks are sometimes utilized between transmitter and antenna in order to modify its impedance more closely match that of transmission lines feeding it.
Witness Wells
Radionics devices, like tarot cards or Ouija boards, are widely used as divination tools. Yet the artful boxes filled with dials, stick pads and plates that comprise these machines set them apart from The Secret-style new age crap you might find at hipster bars. Rather than Abrams’s healing method based on radiation-emitting illness and health indicators as primary causal agents in radionics‘ updated version; intentions alone cause results – not machines! Furthermore, their aesthetic appearance distinguishes them from engineering-divination used by companies or FDA for creative problem-solving engineering-divination to solve creative challenges creatively.
