Quantum-acoustic programs

The team led by Bienfait at Case Western Reserve University has achieved an important breakthrough in circuit quantum optics, the study of interactions between superconducting quantum bits and microscopic surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. Previous experiments using SAWs have demonstrated how quantum information stored in superconducting qubits can be entangled with microscopic acoustic waves of the SAW device through electron spin resonance (ESR), which has great potential for quantum computing. Unfortunately, though ESR measurements remain sensitive enough, their number of quantum particles causes interference that limits measurement sensitivity limiting studies that explore how classical behavior morphs into quantum behavior easily.
To limit interference, scientists cooled SAW devices down to extremely low temperatures. This enabled scientists to reduce phonon vibrations almost to zero and reach quantum ground states for individual frequencies which was previously impossible without costly equipment.
In a separate study, Bienfait and his team, including graduate students Kevin Satzinger, Youpeng Zhong, Hung-Shen Chang, Greg Peairs, Ming-Han Chou, Joel Grebel and Rhys Povey reported in Nature that they have reduced the threshold for SAW phonon excitations to approximately one-fifth of classical limit. This has created opportunities to engineer exotic quantum states using SAWs as well as improve quantum acoustic systems used for high speed quantum communications or sensors.
Researchers hope their research could pave the way towards creating a quantum translator, which would allow quantum signals to be transmitted long distances at room temperature similar to how electronic atoms can be communicated using optical lasers. As their next step, researchers intend to create hybrid quantum systems with superconducting circuit-based qubits combined with piezoelectric SAW devices.
