Occupational Therapy Handout – Energy Conservation

Frustration can be an ongoing struggle for many patients, but occupational therapy can provide vital assistance through education and energy conservation techniques.

Work simplification strategies allow individuals to remain in activities longer and improve their quality of life. Occupational Therapists educate on energy conservation’s 4 P’s: plan, prioritise, pace and position.

1. Prioritize

Living with a chronic health condition that results in fatigue requires learning how to conserve energy as much as possible in order to decrease fatigue and still engage in activities that matter most. Occupational therapy professionals can assist individuals by teaching personalized strategies, tools, and habits for optimizing energy use.

Energy conservation starts with prioritization. Occupational therapists (OTs) can teach patients to create a list of daily tasks they want or need to accomplish, then break those down into more manageable goals. Pacing, rest breaks and scheduling can all help reduce decision fatigue while selecting adaptive equipment such as walkers or wheelchairs can further help minimize physical strain on their bodies.

Energy conservation can be especially essential for those suffering from respiratory conditions like COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma or cystic fibrosis. Breathing issues and fatigue caused by physical movement may worsen with prolonged physical exertion, leading to oxygen desaturation (unsafe levels below 90% saturation). An occupational therapist (OT) can assist these patients by prioritizing daily activities and employing energy conservation techniques that might include setting an alarm to remind them when overexerting themselves. An educator can also recommend the use of a pulse oximeter to track their energy levels and identify when they require rest. Furthermore, they may offer educational materials on how to conserve energy during breathing exercises as well as recommend optimal sleeping positions to ensure breathing comfort.

2. Pace

Pacing is an energy conservation strategy to combat fatigue and exhaustion. An occupational therapist can coach patients to work at a steady speed and stop before feeling overwhelmed, alternate tasks with recovery positions and use reachers, slings or long-handled sponges for relief of physical strain and effort, prioritise tasks accordingly and use a commode or urinal at night instead of bathroom trips for reduced bathroom trips – helping save their energy for meaningful activities that bring purposeful satisfaction in life. By employing these strategies patients can conserve their energy to spend it wisely on life-enhancing experiences!

4. Plan

Living with fatigue or low energy can be challenging. Occupational therapists can assist patients in managing their energy so they can still participate in the things that matter to them most, by teaching energy conservation strategies that don’t involve doing less but rather focus on doing it more efficiently and effectively so their energy lasts throughout the day.

For instance, occupational therapists (OTs) can assist individuals living with respiratory conditions like COPD, lung cancer, or pulmonary hypertension to plan their daily activities around pacing and rest when feeling tired, as well as encourage the use of pulse oximeters to track oxygen saturation levels and prevent oxygen desaturation.

Energy conservation for those suffering with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, focuses on maintaining adequate levels of oxygen for brain health as the illness advances. This may involve teaching patients to plan daily tasks around pacing and using pulse oximeters to monitor saturation levels to avoid overspending; simplifying daily tasks; or delegating some tasks to family, friends or paid caregivers.
