Garyaev worked at the Institute of Physical and Technical Problems of the Soviet Academy of Sciences as senior researcher and group leader from 1984 – 1998, discovering two previously unknown memory types of DNA molecules recorded using correlation laser spectroscopy. From here he began exploring novel areas of genetic coding until creating Wave Genetics or Lingvistiko – Wave Genome as his new direction within genetics in 1994.
