F8T5

RADIONIC Electronic Fluorescent UnderCabinet/UnderCounter Ballast 120V for (2) F8T5, or (1) F8T5 + (1) F13T5 Lamps is Instant Start Ballast.

A preferred embodiment of ballast circuit 10 is designed to operate F4T5 type lamps (4-watt lamps). Ideally, its power factor should exceed 90% and thus represent an improvement over magnetic ballasts which typically only achieve maximum power factors of about 50% and minimum power factors of around 80% as described by U.S. Pat. No. 5,023,521.

The terminals 18 and 20 of the power supply are electrically linked by a capacitor 70 with an equivalent value of 4 microfarads +5% at 170 volts AC, providing excellent power factor correction in the ballast circuit. This capacitor boasts high capacitance which contributes to excellent power factor correction in this ballast circuit.

Inductor 26 features a core size, coil wire number and gap width selected specifically to meet this application and to deliver desired inductive reactance for operation of fluorescent lamp. Furthermore, triac 52 was chosen with appreciable gate sensitivity across all quadrants as well as having an appreciable trigger current of under 8 milliamps to enable proper functioning of ballast circuitry to run fluorescent lamp correctly.

As in the previous embodiment, capacitor 140 serves to avoid latching or latch-out problems at the trigger input terminal of a triac. This is accomplished using a snubber circuit comprised of resistance and capacitance connected in series so as to stop latching at its trigger input terminal until sufficient voltage builds up to trigger diacs.

Radionic hi tech offers an assortment of fluorescent ballasts designed for use in numerous applications, such as under cabinet task lighting and commercial grade illumination. Their selection also features specialty designs suited for industrial purposes as well as standard fluorescent designs with different case styles, mounting configurations and voltage options available.

Electronic ballasts are used to regulate starting voltage and operating current of lighting devices. They convert AC electricity to DC power before sending it directly to arc lamps using capacitors as filters that filter and regulate voltage before being sent through a series of electrodes to the lamp. They also help decrease harmonic distortion which increases lamp lifespan while simultaneously improving performance – while creating less electromagnetic interference (EMI).

The present invention comprises a circuit 10 consisting of a capacitor 70 connected electrically between power supply terminals 18 and 20, selected with an ideal capacitance value of 4mF +/-5% at 170 Volts A.C, to limit current flow within its maximum load rating for fluorescent lamp 12. Additionally, triac 52 serves as a snubber diac with its input terminal being directly connected to capacitor 70 and trigger output terminal electrically linked with control electrode of bulb and is activated when there is sufficient voltage build-up across capacitor 70.

Resistors 30 should be connected between the capacitor 28 and the trigger input terminal of the triac 52 in order to provide ballasting impedance that regulates current levels appropriate for fluorescent lamp operation. Preferably 470K-ohm resistors should be used, to avoid potential unsafe discharge of capacitor when power is turned off.

The present invention features circuits 10, 100 and 200 which are particularly advantageous because they have been engineered to work effectively at lower line voltages such as 105 volts while still accommodating and absorbing voltage increases without restriking problems associated with prior art ballasts.
