# Peaceful Alternatives Counseling For Couples

## Couples Counseling

When couples first meet, they envision a future together that is full of love and happiness. However, relationships aren’t exactly like Hallmark movies and can take work to maintain. During difficult times, many couples seek help from a licensed behavioral health specialist to navigate relationship struggles. Couples counseling is a type of talk therapy that involves two romantic partners and a therapist.

Sometimes called marriage counseling, family therapy or relationship counseling, couples therapy aims to relieve distress, improve communication and build stronger bonds between partners. During sessions, a therapist acts as the neutral facilitator of a safe environment and guides both partners through an exploration of their shared patterns and issues that affect their relationship. Depending on the therapist and approach, couples therapy can be helpful for a wide variety of challenges including communication breakdowns, trust concerns, intimacy issues and infidelity.

A therapist’s role is to guide the conversation, ensure both partners feel heard and refocus any discussion away from blame. During the initial phase of couples therapy, a therapist may help identify any specific issues and establish treatment goals. Throughout the therapy process, a therapist can offer insight into dysfunctional interactions, teach new skills for resolving conflict and encourage both partners to practice these tools at home between sessions.

## Group Counseling

Group counseling provides a safe and welcoming space to share thoughts, emotions, and experiences while gaining perspective and support from peers. Sessions are led by a trained professional, but the participants decide what they want to discuss. Depending on the topic, group counseling may help with anxiety, grief, depression, or social struggles. This type of therapy is often chosen over individual psychotherapy because it allows the participants to see that they are not alone and that healing does not have to take place in isolation.

This can be helpful in identifying any unhelpful patterns and providing insight into how to change those behaviors. The group environment also allows participants to witness other members’ therapeutic progress, which can give them hope that they too can make positive changes in their lives.

Initially, it can be uncomfortable to share personal feelings with strangers in a group setting, but most participants find that their discomfort diminishes as they continue participating in the group. In the end, most people choose to participate in group counseling because they believe it can be more effective than individual psychotherapy.

The unique format of group counseling provides the opportunity for participants to receive a variety of perspectives on their issues. Different personalities in the room offer a wide range of insights into what is working and what needs improvement. This type of feedback can be more useful than the typical advice you would get from friends because it is specific to your situation and can provide practical, actionable tips that you can use immediately.

Depending on the topic, group counseling can help with anxiety, grief, depression, or problems with relationships and communication. Typically, these groups are run by mental health professionals who have experience in a particular approach to treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, or interpersonal psychotherapy. However, some groups are run by peer support specialists who have experience helping others manage their own difficulties. These groups are usually geared towards managing ongoing difficult circumstances, such as parenting a developmentally disabled child or fertility issues.
