# Biohacking Movies

The term [biohacking](https://alsuprun.com/) is often associated with high-tech gadgets, supplements and extreme routines. But at its core, it’s about a systematic approach to optimize your health with measurable outcomes.

From glow-in-the-dark mice to gene-modded weed and payment microchips in your hand, this Netflix show showcases the excitement of do-it-yourself biology. Dov Greenbaum of Science calls the series a “sophisticated sociotechnological thriller.”

## 1. Biohackers

The Netflix series Biohackers introduces viewers to a world of scientific experimentation that goes far beyond a typical university lab. It follows college student Mia Akerlund as she meets her professor Tanja Lorenz and finds herself sucked into the dark world of illegal genetic experimentation.

It’s a broad term that describes anything you do to promote wellness or unlock your potential. It ranges from simple strategies, like tracking sleep or exercise trends, to experimenting with supplements and even implanted devices.

For example, many people use heat therapy to ease cramps and muscle spasms or increase metabolism. Similarly, some people have started using red or infrared light to treat skin conditions. Many people are also taking a cold plunge or drinking cold-pressed juice as a way to boost energy and improve their mental clarity. The goal is to use evidence-based practices to optimize your health and performance.

This can include established habits such as exercising regularly, eating well and getting enough quality sleep. It can also include a variety of supplements, smart drugs and more experimental approaches like implanted devices and extreme diets. Many of these techniques have limited research and carry risks, so it’s important to discuss them with a health care professional before trying.

One of the key characters is Jasper, a brilliant biology student who has an off-campus biohackspace with DIY lab equipment. He’s working on a gene therapy to treat a rare genetic disorder and has partnered with his roommate, Niklas, who is an extreme biohacker. He’s always trying new things, including experimenting with substances and putting sensors under his skin. It’s unclear whether he’s doing this to get better grades or for the greater good, but it’s clear that he’s passionate about his work. Biohackers does a great job of showing that these scientific experiments don’t have to take place in a laboratory setting and can be done on a small scale at home.

## 2. Regenesis

The popular science thriller series Biohackers, which premiered on Netflix in August 2020, explores the ethical limits of research on humans. Moral philosopher Joachim Boldt, medical researcher Toni Cathomen and synthetic biologist Barbara Di Ventura all watched the six episodes ahead of their release, and gave their impressions:

The show starts with an explosive flash-forward scene at a university laboratory. Mia, a fresher in Freiburg University’s prestigious medical school, is a student of celebrated professor Tanja Lorenz, who conducts illicit genetic experiments in her private lab at home. She soon discovers that Lorenz has a huge DNA database and does various body hacking experiments, like gene-modded fungi, underwater pills to extend the length of time you can hold your breath, or payment microchips in your hands.

## 3. The Black Swan

Modern [biohacking](https://alsuprun.com/) has evolved from a fringe concept reserved for Silicon Valley elites or home-lab enthusiasts to a global health movement backed by scientific rigor, public education, and clinical applications. The Amazon Prime documentary Biohack Yourself is an excellent primer and features experts like Dr. Todd Ovokaitys, who demonstrates how laser-activated stem cells and other techniques can extend healthspan. His work is now clinically implemented at clinics like Xtend Optimal Health in Panama.

Mia goes to medical school to get close to a professor she suspects played a role in her family tragedy. She quickly becomes tangled in the world of illegal genetic experimentation.

## 4. The Martian

A romp that’s as much a love letter to science as to the cinema, The Martian is arguably Ridley Scott’s best film in years. The director of Alien and Blade Runner, Scott brings a similar sense of the inherent thrill of exploration to the story about an astronaut stranded on Mars. His visual optimism carries over from the arid vistas of Mars to the scenes at NASA headquarters, where teams of engineers and scientists try to jerry-rig a rescue mission.

The movie is anchored by an exceptional performance from Matt Damon as Mark Watney, an everyman science nerd who proves that the human spirit can triumph over even the most improbable odds. As Watney, Damon demonstrates that he can take any role and make it his own, turning a simple, one-note character into a memorable presence.

The film’s story is based on a true story that occurred during a manned mission to Mars in the early part of the 20th century. During this mission, an enormous storm caused the other astronauts to abandon the spacecraft, leaving Watney behind, presumed dead. However, he survived, and was able to sustain himself using the resources on the surface of Mars, including plants and animals.

Like the previous two films on this list, The Martian is a movie that’s as much about science and technology as it is about survival. It also reflects the importance of scientific research and the need to push the boundaries of what is possible. It’s no wonder that the movie was such a success.
