Many people use alternative healing modalities like reflexology, massage therapy, and energy medicine to promote overall wellness. These practices are often used alongside conventional medical treatments in hospitals and wellness centers.
The mind plays a crucial role in various energy healing methods, impacting the practical methodology and fostering a stronger practitioner-client connection. Many techniques incorporate intentional focus, promoting a mind-body connection, visualization, mindfulness, and self-awareness.
Healing Touch
In this form of energy therapy, the practitioner uses gentle hand techniques to help re-pattern a person’s energy field and accelerate healing of the body, mind an spirit. It’s also been used to reduce stress and boost immune function.
Energy therapies are based on the principle that illnesses and imbalances can occur in the body’s invisible energy field, or biofield. The field surrounds the physical body, and a variety of practitioners use different energy-based techniques to access, channel, balance and manipulate the biofield.
Anecdotal evidence supports the benefits of biofield therapies for a variety of conditions, including asthma, hypertension and arthritis. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine reports that these methods have been shown to reduce stress levels, increase relaxation and aid in the treatment of a number of chronic health problems.
The goal of an energy therapy session is to restore your child’s natural energy flow by opening, connecting and balancing the energy system. Practitioners believe that when the body is in pain, illness or trauma, energy becomes stuck or blocked. They believe that by shifting the balance of your child’s energy, you can promote healing in both the physical and emotional realms.
During a treatment, the energy healer will place their hands on or several inches above your child’s body in a series of locations to shift the energy flow. Most children experience little to no discomfort during the treatment. They may feel warmth, coldness, tingling, or see colors during the session.
One of the most popular types of energy therapies is Reiki, which was developed in Japan in the late 1800s. During a Reiki session, the practitioner places their hands on or over the body in an effort to distribute energy. It has been shown to decrease stress, relax the autonomic nervous system and lower heart rate, as well as improve symptoms of psychological distress.
Many massage modalities incorporate concepts of subtle-energy manipulation, such as Shiatsu, which emphasizes the movement of chi along certain nodes and meridians, and Chinese acupressure, which stimulates the body’s acupoints to release blockages and encourage the flow of energy. Therapeutic Touch is another hands-on, non-invasive energy therapy that can stimulate the vagus nerve and decrease heart rate.
Bioenergy Healing
Bio Energy Therapy is a non-invasive energy healing technique that involves the transfer of human energy. It reactivates the body’s natural healing systems and releases energy blockages. This energy is transferred through the hands of the therapist to areas that need healing.
Bio energy healing is one of the oldest known methods of treating physical, metal and emotional illnesses. It has been used for thousands of years by healers from all over the world. It is believed that bio-energy is intelligent and knows where the body needs help. It also is able to detect and remove any blockages in the bio-field. Bioenergy therapy is similar to Reiki but different in many ways. While Reiki practitioners need to receive an attunement from a Reiki master in order to channel universal life force energy, bioenergy practitioners are able to transmit the energy to the client without any special instruction.
Both bio-energy and Reiki practitioners may work with clients in person or remotely. They can touch the client or hold their hands just a few inches away from the body, and can use specific hand movements and pre-determined protocols for different dis-eases. They can put energy into the client or remove it, and often can do both. They can also offer energy to animals, plants, and water when they are ailing.
While both bio-energy and Reiki are effective on their own, they can be even more powerful when used in combination. Combining the physical benefits of deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, and lymph drainage with the mental and emotional benefits of energy healing, bio-energy massage offers a comprehensive approach to wellness and healing.
In addition to relieving muscle tension and improving mobility, the holistic nature of this type of therapy can reduce anxiety and stress levels. As the body’s innate healing processes are stimulated, bio-energy massage can promote better sleep and overall well-being. In addition, it can improve circulation and detoxify the body, helping to eliminate toxins and waste products. This energy work is a great way to enhance overall wellness, and can benefit people of all ages and health conditions.
Therapeutic Touch
Therapeutic touch (TT) is a modern interpretation of several ancient healing practices. It was developed and standardized in the 1970s by Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN, professor emeritus at New York University, and Dora Kunz, an energy healer. TT practitioners use gentle hand techniques to re-pattern a person’s energy field and stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal. Some studies suggest that therapeutic touch can reduce pain and anxiety, ease tense muscles, improve sleep, and speed wound healing in people with cancer or other conditions. It also may help improve stress levels and heart rate variability in children with chronic illness.
Many people who seek energy therapy believe that illnesses or health challenges are caused by blockages or imbalances in the invisible energetic field that lives within and around the body. This belief is based on the concept that our personal energetic life force, called chi, qi, or prana, flows and circulates throughout our bodies. Energy therapies are aimed at restoring the flow of this energy and encouraging positive thoughts and emotions to promote wellness.
The most common types of energy therapies are acupuncture, Reiki and acupressure mats. Most of these therapies are performed by a trained practitioner or healthcare professional who uses noninvasive, hands-on treatments. Some energy therapies may be combined with other traditional medical treatments, such as chemotherapy or surgery.
In addition to reducing pain and anxiety, some energy therapies can also stimulate the immune system. For example, a recent study found that patients with inflammatory bowel disease who received a combination of Reiki and acupressure were more likely to have improved symptoms than those who only received acupressure.
Despite these potential benefits, the scientific community has not been able to prove that energy therapy works. This may be due to the fact that Western-style research methods are not able to measure or verify some of the effects claimed by these approaches, including their influence on quantum mechanics and other postulated non-local phenomena.
Those who receive energy therapy often report positive side effects, such as a sense of well-being, calmness, and enhanced mental clarity. However, most of the time these side effects are mild and brief. Serious side effects are very rare.
Reiki
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle energy healing practice that activates the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Developed by Mikao Usui, a Japanese seeker of spiritual truths, Reiki is associated with a number of health and well-being benefits including stress reduction, increased sleep quality, and improved mood. It has also been linked to greater pain relief in studies of cancer patients.
Reiki practitioners believe that universal life force energy flows through all living beings and is naturally present in our bodies. This energy can be tapped into during a Reiki session through the practitioner’s hands, which are held a few inches away from the body or may touch lightly to promote healing and balance. During the session, the client will be encouraged to relax and focus on their breathing and the sensations of the energy moving throughout their body. Practitioners have reported feeling heat or tingling, seeing visualizations such as colors and images or receiving messages.
The process of a Reiki treatment is simple. The practitioner will ask the client to get comfortable, usually lying down, and will move their hands to various areas of the body to channel the energy. The practitioner will often have their hands gently above the head, and sometimes on the shoulders and hips. Some wellness centers use reiki wands and crystals to assist in directing the flow of energy, but these are not necessary for this modality.
Many individuals experience feelings of clarity and calmness during a Reiki session. This is because the energy can clear and release limiting beliefs that are no longer serving the individual or the goals of their journey. As a result, they can feel more empowered to follow their intuition, be courageous in making changes that are for their highest good and allow them to move forward with a sense of purpose.
Reiki can be used as a standalone energy therapy or in conjunction with traditional treatments, such as massage. As with any wellness practice, it is important to talk with your healthcare provider before starting a new treatment. While research supports a number of the benefits associated with Reiki, it is not a replacement for medical care.
