Occupational Therapy Frequency and Duration

Occupational therapy, or OT, is an essential healthcare practice that can help people of all ages overcome barriers to daily functioning and living. This individualized treatment is designed to make a person’s life more productive and satisfying through a holistic approach that addresses the whole person. OT addresses physical, emotional, and mental health.

Frequency

Unlike other disciplines, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy (OT) takes the whole person into account when treating their injury or disability. This holistic approach makes it different from other therapies, as it aims to enhance a patient’s quality of life and independence in day-to-day activities. Whether that means helping children with disabilities build coordination or teach them how to deal with emotional challenges, OT is about more than just healing a physical impairment; it’s about changing the way patients live with their conditions. This individualized approach means that the number of therapy sessions may vary greatly from one child to another.

Duration

OTs are trained to understand a person’s challenges and strengths. They use comprehensive assessments to design and implement individualized interventions that incorporate therapeutic activities, adaptive techniques, and environmental modifications. This holistic approach allows OTs to bridge the gap between a client’s abilities and the demands of their daily lives, promoting optimal function and well-being.

Occupational therapy helps people of all ages manage and cope with their injuries or disabilities by improving their ability to perform everyday tasks. This may include assisting children with developmental difficulties to participate in school activities, enhancing physical rehabilitation after surgery, or helping seniors manage symptoms of chronic health conditions.

Throughout the process, therapists work closely with clients to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed. The length of treatment can vary, depending on the severity of the injury or illness and each individual’s goals. Skilled therapy services are typically discontinued when the person meets goals, achieves measurable outcomes, or decides that further sessions are no longer needed. Regular evaluations and ongoing communication with the therapist help determine when a person is ready to transition to consultative therapy or to discharge from skilled care. CarersCardUK is proud to support the work of OTs and to highlight the importance of family-centred care.

Goals

Occupational therapy is a healthcare practice that helps individuals across the lifespan participate in the activities that are important to them. This may include addressing physical, emotional, or social issues that are limiting a person’s quality of life. OT practitioners are uniquely qualified to create personalized intervention plans for each client, which can include therapeutic exercises, adaptive techniques, and the use of assistive devices.

Unlike other types of rehabilitation, occupational therapy takes into account the whole person. This includes a client’s emotional and social well-being, which is why it is so effective at helping people manage their disabilities and injuries. In addition, OTs focus on improving an individual’s daily life skills so that they can live as independently as possible. This makes OTs an ideal choice for children with developmental challenges, as well as adults and seniors dealing with physical changes or injuries.

Assessments

Occupational therapists use assessments to help them understand what the client is trying to do and what might be getting in the way. Assessments can include interviews, observations and standardized tests. The American Occupational Therapy Association defines evaluation as the process that identifies what a client wants and needs to do, what they can do right now, and what is getting in the way of those goals. Assessments are the specific tools – such as interviews, observation or standardized tests – that you choose along the way. Every assessment should map back to a clinical question and be part of the overall evaluation.

A common OT tool is the Katz Activity-Based Disability Scale (ABDS), which helps to determine whether a client has difficulty performing basic tasks such as climbing stairs or tying their shoes. Other OT assessments include the Stroke Impact Scale, which evaluates a client’s ability to participate in activities after a stroke. The Sensory Profile 2 is a popular tool among school-based occupational therapists and clinic-based OTs, as it can help to identify any sensory processing issues that might be impacting a child’s learning or behavior.

Return-to-Work Planning
If a client is injured at work, an OT can liaise with their employer and develop a plan to slowly reintroduce them into their pre-injury job roles. The therapist can also assess their physical environment and recommend any modifications that might be needed.

Another type of OT assessment involves cognitive rehabilitation. If a client has reported changes in thinking due to their injury, the therapist can assess their attention, memory, information processing and executive function. This can be helpful when determining if the change is due to a mental health issue or a result of the injury.

Using occupational therapy specific assessments can be challenging for some therapists. A study that utilized qualitative interviewing found that occupational therapists often struggle with changing their practice and using new assessments. This could be a result of the amount of time that is required to train in a new tool or a lack of confidence in its ability to provide accurate and useful data. This can be further complicated by the fact that different country and practice contexts can impact how therapists use assessments.
