# What is Resonant Therapy?

## Resonance

Resonance is the phenomenon by which vibrations of an object become amplified when other vibrations with similar frequencies as its natural oscillation are amplified. Resonance can occur in mechanical, structural and acoustical systems as well as AC electric circuits; additionally it’s visible in nuclear physics when electromagnetic waves of certain frequencies excite electrons to higher energy states.

On a playground swing, for instance, children tend to oscillate at their natural frequency with maximum amplitude. When exposed to periodic forces that start off well below this frequency, she will gradually increase her swinging speed until reaching equilibrium at a constant, slow velocity; this process is called mechanical resonance as illustrated below.

On the other hand, when exposed to periodic driving forces that correspond with its natural resonant frequencies, large amplitude vibrations may cause it to collapse. Roman soldiers would often break off marching steps when crossing bridges because this might resonate with its natural frequency and cause it to collapse; engineers should always consider resonance when designing large structures.

We’ve all seen or heard of the old joke of running your finger along a wine glass to cause it to vibrate; when your finger hits it at just the right frequency for that glass’ natural vibration frequency, then sound is created when hitting.

Resonance is used by many musical instruments to improve the quality of their sound. A flute tube’s length, violin strings’ shapes, and even its body all work to produce vibrations which reinforce and amplify any note played on an instrument – similar to how radio tuners work by selecting specific broadcast frequencies from myriad options available to them.
