Vibration Therapy for Cancer

Whole-body vibration (WBV) causes muscles to contract and relax automatically, helping improve strength, balance and circulation without heavy exercise.

Cancer treatments may lead to fatigue, muscle loss and nerve issues; WBV can assist in mitigating these effects.

Vibration may also stimulate osteocytes to promote bone growth and limit metastasis of breast cancer; scientists call these vibrational “jackhammers.”

1. Relaxation

Stress reduction is an integral component of cancer treatment plans both during and post diagnosis. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises and yoga can be utilized to decrease heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rates while relieving discomfort while decreasing anxiety and depression levels. Sleep quality improves as a result as does healing and renewal – with complementary and integrative health specialists, mental health practitioners or healthcare practitioners teaching these techniques for your benefit; or self-learning them easily on your own.

Music and sound in general have a soothing effect, such as listening to relaxing music, chanting or drumming can provide both relaxation and upliftment for our spirits. Music therapy has long been used as a form of community building as well as an expressive outlet. Listening to calming, uplifted music may reduce depression-related negative impacts while simultaneously increasing energy levels.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) therapy has the power to stimulate anabolic responses in bones and prevent cancer-induced bone loss, animal studies have demonstrated. WBV helped decrease elevated serum-bound TRACP5b caused by myeloma while normalizing bone remodeling processes in appendicular skeletons (like those found on hands and feet). Unfortunately, WBV failed to improve tibial trabecular bone mineral density (TBD) or bone strength for postmenopausal breast cancer patients taking aromatase inhibitors.

Vibration has shown promise as a cancer research technique, by encouraging interactions between bone cells and cancer cells and decreasing osteoclastogenesis and metastatic potential. Further investigation must be performed in order to ascertain optimal WBV magnitude and frequency values for this purpose.

Vibration has also been used to destroy cancerous cells through targeting their membranes with vibronic modes. Viscous dynamic abrasion (VDA), or molecular mechanical forces acting upon cancer cells directly can disrupt cell membranes and destroy cancerous tissue without harming healthy tissue, offering new treatment possibilities in the future. This form of vibration may emerge as a viable treatment option.

2. Strengthening

Strengthening something means to make it stronger, resilient or tougher – this applies to everything from muscles and bones to brain cells and immune systems. Vibration therapy has proven an effective tool in strengthening cancer patients.

Current standard cancer treatments cause severe bone damage due to hormonal fluctuations and metastases, leading to fractures and osteonecrosis [28]. Complicating matters further are the limited physical activities experienced by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy as well as bisphosphonates and denosumab’s ability to increase bone fragility; researchers are exploring interventions which utilize bone’s natural anabolic response to mechanical stimulations in order to increase healing [30, 31].

Our bodies’ skeletons are constantly adapting and remodeling in response to mechanical signals generated from activities and exercises such as walking, swimming, cycling and weightlifting – activities which send complex mechanical cues throughout our bones and bodies and are essential in maintaining bone and muscle health.

Studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of vibration on bone formation and regeneration by activating osteogenic genes and improving mineral homeostasis in cancer patients and mice [89]. Studies also demonstrate that older participants or cells typically respond better to vibration treatment than their younger counterparts because they have developed the necessary adaptations for it.

Vibration enhances bone vascularisation by modulating endothelial cell functions via osteoclast signalling. This benefit is especially useful for cancer patients whose circulation and vascularity may have become compromised and who are thus more prone to bone loss.

WBV at 0.3 g, 90 Hz was found to significantly enhance trabecular bone volume in one murine cancer model and increase connectivity density of L5 vertebrae, while decreasing osteolytic lesions and tumor burden due to reduced MSC numbers [57]. MSCs can serve as both promoters of bone resorption while suppressing cancerous growth simultaneously [58,59].

These findings demonstrate how vibration can significantly enhance bone health and decrease fracture risk among patients with cancer. Furthermore, vibration therapy can easily and safely be practiced at home using a vibration plate – making it an affordable and accessible solution.

3. Boosting Immunity

Vibration therapy can play an integral role in helping the body bolster its own immunity system. Studies have revealed that whole-body vibration (WBV) increases plate-like bone tissue in cancer patients’ proximal tibias and L5 vertebrae, improves trabecular connectivity density, and decreased osteoclastogenesis (bone breakdown) rates relative to healthy controls [58].

Studies on human cells demonstrated how WBV caused a shift in the mix of immune cell types called macrophages, helping them better recognize foreign invaders and respond appropriately – an effect known as innate immunity. Furthermore, vibration triggered the production of compounds known as molecular jackhammers which target cancer cells directly by disrupting their membranes – they contain groups of aminocyanines which bind with cancer cells to produce chemicals which destroy them, known as anthracanines which act like molecular jackhammers; unlike some cancer drugs which develop resistance over time.

Molecular jackhammers were created as part of an immunotherapy treatment for cancer, with support coming from the Milford B. Hatcher Endowment.

Other forms of vibration therapy may also help the body’s natural defenses. Vibration has been shown to lower cortisol levels while simultaneously increasing levels of glucocorticoid receptors in skin and brain tissues – these changes help decrease stress while simultaneously strengthening defense mechanisms against pathogens.

In another study, scientists employed ultrasonic waves to break apart tumors in mouse models of pancreatic cancer. Low frequency waves killed the tumor without harming any surrounding normal cells – similar results were achieved when treating mice with hepatocellular carcinoma, another form of liver cancer.

Babak Baban, an immunologist and interim associate dean for research at MCG, notes that although it’s unclear exactly how vibration works to promote healthy cells and destroy cancerous ones, “it seems to be capable of altering different inflammatory responses”. As rates of inflammation-producing diseases such as diabetes and obesity rise rapidly, these findings indicate vibration may provide one way to treat or prevent them.

4. Detoxifying

Detoxification is a form of vibration therapy designed to rid the body of harmful substances through supporting its natural detoxification processes, including those found in liver, kidney, gastrointestinal system, skin, and lungs. A diet approach may also aid the process, with less sugar consumed and processed food eliminated (these contain chemicals which block detoxification processes in our bodies). Medical detoxification typically includes controlled withdrawal from substances like drugs or alcohol over a set timeframe to avoid withdrawal symptoms – this form of withdrawal therapy often forms part of addiction treatment programs.
